You may know Little Richard. And if you don’t, you should.

Little Richard’s first hit was “Tutti Frutti,” recorded in September 1955, and the years that followed featured hit after hit from the multi-talented singer, songwriter, and pianist. It wasn’t just his music that became the stuff of legend—his trademark pompadour, eyeliner, and energetic style of piano playing (which often eschewed a piano bench for boogieing) made a mark on entertainers for years to come.

As one of the founding fathers of rock and roll, Little Richard brought a unique flavor and style to both live and recorded music that continues to influence artists to this day. His songs have been covered by legends including Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, and Mötorhead.

Few entertainers have the privilege of going by one name: Cher. Prince. Beyoncé. And then there’s Sade.

Born Helena Folasade Adu, Sade spent her early years in Nigeria before moving to England with her mother at age four. Her nickname, which eventually became her stage name, originated in Nigeria as a shortened version of her middle name.

Having grown up listening to American soul superstars like Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield, she joined a North London Latin funk band called Pride as a vocalist in 1981. After being scouted by record companies who couldn’t get enough of her velvet voice, she formed the band Sade and took some members from Pride with her. Their first single was “Your Love Is King.”

Artists across genres have made mention of Sade’s influence on their music and lives, like singer Keri Hilson and Chino Moreno of Deftones. Sade and her band are credited with influencing the neo soul genre and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026.

We're deeply saddened by the passing of artist and friend of Getty, David Hockney. An artist who was unafraid to explore drawing, printmaking, painting, and photography, his legacy will inspire generations to come.

Born on this day in 1815, Julia Margaret Cameron began her photographic practice at age 48 after receiving a camera as a gift from her daughter and son-in-law.

She became one of the best-known photographers of the 19th century thanks to her figurative portraits, made largely at her home on the Isle of Wight.

The British artist enlisted everyone around her as models, including family members, domestic servants, and famous local residents.

Her compositions frequently drew inspiration from Italian Renaissance painters like Raphael, Giotto, and Michelangelo.
