This Juneteenth, we honor the end of slavery in America, resilience, and the enduring power of cultural expression.

Artist Alison Saar explores the histories, traditions, and lived experiences of the African diaspora through sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media. Though her work varies in style and media, Saar consistently focuses on themes of Black identity, particularly the experiences of Black women. Drawing inspiration from the folk art, spiritual practices, and religious traditions of African, Caribbean, and Latin American communities, she often conveys her messages through powerful representations of Black bodies.

Take a closer look at "Bigfoot 2" by Roy De Forest!

In this 1985 lithograph, the artist places Bigfoot at the center of the image, caring for a pair of wild dogs. The red moon sheds light on the forest but also suggests danger. De Forest’s whimsical style evokes a dreamlike atmosphere while also provoking a sense of foreboding.
