Earth Science Summer: Geology Hike –Lake Hope State Park Nature Center, Furnace Ridge Rd., New Plymouth, OH 45654, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
The ODNR Division of Geological Survey invites Ohioans to participate in Earth Science Summer in celebration of America 250 and the Collaborative Summer Library Program’s 2026 theme: “Unearth a Story.” In collaboration with Ohio State Parks, join geologist Frank Fugitt and Chuck Salmons for a hike to “Unearth a Story” in Lake Hope State Park. Hikers will learn about the area’s natural history with an examination of the rocks exposed there and how geology helped to shape numerous industries that fostered Ohio’s economic and cultural development. Participants should meet at the amphitheater outside the Nature Center. The hike will take place on the Buzzard Cave Trail and is about 0.5 miles long. The terrain is moderately difficult. Hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking boots and appropriate clothing for this early summer hike, to bring hiking/walking sticks, and to have plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray. Please note that ticks may be active along the trail. The event is free and recommended for ages 5 and up.

Beside the pool in the campground. Join us beside the swimming pool in the campground for a beginner's archery course. All equipment is provided. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Take a 4-mile hike to experience the forest on a combination of public and backcountry trails. The terrain will be steep and uneven. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water.

The Moonlight Canoe Trip is a calm, unforgettable way to experience the river after dark. As the sun sets and the moon rises, guests paddle a peaceful 5-mile stretch of water under the night sky, surrounded by quiet reflections and the sounds of nature. With minimal river traffic and a gentle current, the river feels slow, serene, and completely different from a daytime paddle. This 1–2 hour self-guided trip allows you to move at your own pace, making it ideal for couples, friends, or anyone looking for a relaxed and unique evening on the water. The focus is on the experience — moonlight on the water, cool evening air, and the calm rhythm of paddling. At the end of the trip, the night wraps up around a bonfire with complimentary wine and s’mores. Guests can warm up, relax, and linger under the stars, sharing stories and enjoying the firelight. It’s a simple, cozy, and memorable way to end a magical night on the river.

If you are new to paddling or already love it, join us for a quick tutorial and then an easy paddle to look for interesting plants and animals around the lake. Meet at the boat ramp on OH-278. Ages 12 and up. All equipment is provided free of charge. Pre-registration is required and is limited to 5 participants. Register by emailing [email protected] at least 1 day in advance of the program time. Registration is not complete unless we have confirmed it with you.
Hungry Hummers- Lake Hope 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Nature Center, Same entrance as the campground
Attend our most popular program of the year and attempt to hand-feed a ruby-throated hummingbird with a vial of sugar water! Listen to the natural history of this fascinating creature and how to care for and feed them at your home during the first 30 minutes. The rest of the time it is an open-house style program so come when you are able. Meet at the Nature Center. It's free like all of our park programs! No reservations necessary. All ages welcome but it is best to be able to sit still and quiet. There will also be yellow jackets and other insects interested in feeding from your sugar water too!

Learn the basics of shooting a compound bow and spend some time practicing your technique. Challenge yourself or challenge a friend in a showdown of your newfound skill! Meet at the parking area across from the archery range. Ages 8 and up. Participants must be present at 10:00am to participate. All materials will be provided and are free of charge. Forest Bathing (Shinrin-yoku)- Lake Hope Shelter House(Just Past the Archery Range) 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Join our certified therapy guide to nourish your nervous system through a guided mindfulness practice inspired by Japanese Shinrin-yoku or "forest bathing." We will take in the sights, smells, sounds, and sensations of the forest during a slow wander along the lakeside, including moments of stillness, exploration, and reflection to support mind, body, and spirit. Meet at the Shelter House. Please dress for the weather. Feel free to bring any additional equipment to assist with uneven terrain and potentially muddy conditions. Some sitting pads will be available.

America 250's Red, White & You Block Party, Downtown Logan 11-9
Join Us in Celebrating America’s 250th anniversary at the America 250’s Red, White & You Block Party in Downtown Logan on July 4 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. This family-friendly community celebration will feature live bands, food trucks, arts and crafts, giant games, a kids treasure hunt, the Kazooman Balloon Twister, and a DORA event throughout downtown. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display to cap off the patriotic festivities. Admission is free.
