We’re starting to plan events for our haunt this fall.

Some thoughts tossed around include a Halloween party, a canteen offering homemade stew and hosting movie night.

Other ideas welcome. We have lots to plan for…

We’re thrilled to see the update on the noise/permit ordinance - BOS voted to rescind the previously adopted ordinance that really threw a monkey wrench in the works for so many.

We’re not out of the haunted woods yet - we need the newly reworked ordinance decided and in place.

This is progress! Stay up-to-date on Board actions and let all voices be heard as they work through these next steps.

Keep Middlesex rural!

‼️Update from the Halloween haunt in Locust Hill‼️

Participate in democracy by communicating your concerns over this new ordinance to the Board of Supervisors. Attend meetings and let your voice be heard!

If the early meeting times do not work, call, email, write letters to the Editor at Southside Sentinel. We’ve sent in our letter to the editor, as well as to every member of the board. We directly replied to one member on his own post on Facebook explaining why this ordinance exists, and that he’s open to hearing alternatives.

This ordinance doesn’t only impact our ability to do what we do, but several other community centric events in our county. We do not want to lose why we all live here.

Thank you to everyone that’s contacted us in support of what we do. We hope to pick up in August and start our setup. That plan is in the hands of our elected Board.

Due to the recent ordinance changes in Middlesex County, we are uncertain about proceeding with our seasonal operations. We invest many months in preparation and have incurred significant expenses to create an immersive experience spanning several acres on our private property. We have THE BEST neighbors, and appreciate their support these last 5 years while people gather and enjoy weeks of the haunt.

Our objective has always been to provide a family-friendly haunt while fostering community engagement and supporting local charities, including Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department, Skeletons for St. Jude & Wildlife 911 Northern Neck. We have raised thousands of dollars over the last 3 years. The charitable nature of our community is so very appreciated, and we’ve enjoyed meeting every single one of you! We hope to continue this tradition.

However, the new ordinance introduces potential liabilities related to noise violations and large gatherings, which may force us to cancel our event unless the County Board of Supervisors revises the rules. Although we have a few months to monitor the situation, if the ordinance remains unchanged by the middle of August, we will be compelled to cancel our sixth year of operations. We hate to even consider this; we had some big plans in the works with friends from out of state to further the family friendly experience for all. We strive to make our haunt something new each season, even if you’ve been by several times. Last year’s visit by our wonderful Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department gave kids a first hand look at a fire truck with lights and sirens going, kids could climb in a see how this crucial equipment works. They could talk to our firefighters and possibly create a spark to become future volunteers. Plans to partner with Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department are in the works for this season.

We encourage our community to request the Board consider changing this recently adopted ordinance. The impact is much broader and clearly doesn’t match the small town community we live and thrive in.
