Malachi Whitson is a rising star in the ever expanding jazz scene. Born and raised in Richmond California, Malachi has been rooted in the Bay Area jazz community as both a performer and teacher since his youth. He currently holds the drum chair in the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA where he has had the opportunity to perform and study with prominent artists such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, Dick Oatts, Jerry Bergonzi, and Walter Smith III.
Malachi has also performed and toured with Joshua Redman, Dayna Stephens, Taylor Eigsti, Theo Croker, Helen Sung, and Reuben Rogers. He has been on faculty at the Berkeley Jazz School, the SF Jazz Center, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Oakland School for the Arts, Stanford jazz workshop, Dave Brubeck Institute, and Herbie Hancock Institute as a student teacher.
Some of the accolades he has acquired include the Most Dedicated Musician Award from the SF Jazz organization, Best Drummer award from the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Best Overall Musician from San Jose Jazz Workshop, as well as an Outstanding Steel Pan Instructor from the East Bay Women in Action organization.
Malachi's current project is a new genre bending ensemble known as “Something with Soul." Malachi is creating his own unique repertoire that melds the sultry sounds of soul and R&B with the improvisational freedom of jazz.
