📣 Announcement time!

Familia, we are heading back to California this spring! We are excited to announce that PCPA Theate and the Cal Poly Theatre & Dance Department are bringing the team of Sueños out to the Central Coast for a special workshop of this brand-new musical.

During our time, we'll be focusing on developing the show's movement vocabulary with choreographer extraordinaire, Marissa Herrera. We are incredibly excited and grateful for the dedicated time to develop such an important piece of the storytelling.

In the summer of 1999, the Viramontes family leaves behind their life in Los Angeles for the agricultural town of Watsonville, California, chasing a dream of new beginnings. At the heart of the story is Ali Viramontes, a gifted young violinist and composer whose sights are set on Juilliard. But as the family struggles with financial hardship and personal tensions, Ali finds himself in a town with no orchestra and a dream that seems more distant from than ever. Determined not to let his ambitions slip away, Ali embarks on a daring plan - secretly joining a community college orchestra and making a risky journey to San Francisco for his Juilliard audition.

Along the way, Ali clashes with his father, whose painful past with music casts a long shadow over their relationship. As he fights for his place in the world, Ali discovers that his journey is about more than just making it to Juilliard - it's about finding his voice, embracing his heritage, and redefining what success truly means.

Sueños is a powerful coming-of-age story that celebrates Chicanismo, family, resilience, breaking generational cycles, and the pursuit of dreams against all odds.

Jesse J. Sanchez is an acclaimed composer-lyricist, writer, and music director whose work has reached audiences nationwide. A two-time recipient of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre Frank Young Grant and a recipient of the Milagro Latino Artist Fund Grant, Jesse’s work has been celebrated for its innovation and cultural resonance. He is currently under commission or has received commissions from prestigious organizations such as ZACH Theatre, Boston Lyric Opera, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, Portland Opera, The 24 Hour Playss, Camelot Theatre Company, and more. His notable works include Sueños: Our American Musical, and Jesse is also collaborating with the Dr. Seuss Estate and The Old Globe to create a Spanish version of their Broadway musical, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
