The Drowsy Watcher in Sycamore Grove 🦉
While taking a midday walk in Sycamore Grove Park, I unexpectedly came across an owl dozing off on a branch—its head gently nodding with sleep. I had to sketch the moment, even though the warm sun was making me drowsy too. For a while, it felt like we were mirroring each other—quietly sharing a moment between wakefulness and dreams.

It was my first time seeing an owl in the wild—and certainly not in broad daylight! A reminder that nature still surprises us in the most ordinary hours.

This piece is currently on view at my solo exhibition at the Firehouse Arts Center lobby in Pleasanton.

Last December, on a quiet afternoon, I stood at this street corner.

Red leaves drifted in the wind—students heading home, couples strolling, a bicycle passing by. The city’s rhythm was right there in front of me.
I wanted to capture the colors of that season.

Do you remember last year’s Halloween Brew Crawl Night in downtown Pleasanton?

I stood at a street corner sketching as costumes flowed by—
lamplight, cool air after the rain, and laughter drifting down the street. It felt like stepping into another century.

This small piece began as two quick sketches that I later reworked at home.

On view at Firehouse Arts Center Lobby, Pleasanton.

Fog turns color into memory.

Both of these works were painted on the same foggy day along the California coast — one in the morning, one in the afternoon. In Capitola, the colorful seaside houses softened into quiet tones, their reflections dissolving into the still lagoon. Later at New Brighton Beach, mist drifted across the shoreline, dissolving trees, ocean, and the distant coast into quiet layers of tone.

Painting in fog shifts the focus away from detail and toward atmosphere. Edges blur, colors quiet down, and the feeling of the place becomes more present than the forms themselves.

These pieces are part of my coastal plein air explorations, created on site under changing weather and light.
