Rainbarrow Studio Fine Art, Art Instruction and Graphic Design by artist Frank Sullivan Frank Sullivan showed an interest in art at an early age, drawing incessantly as a child.

Through high school, he studied with a local artist, George Lynch. In 1986 he earned a B.A. in Visual Arts from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he studied drawing and printmaking with Elizabeth Peak. While at Holy Cross, Frank was fortunate to be exposed to the work of visiting artists Michael Mazur and Richard Sheehan, whose work had a lasting impact on him. He later attende

d The American University on a graduate fellowship in printmaking, but left after one semester to pursue a career in music for the next ten years, while continuing to draw regularly as well as teaching drawing classes and doing freelance illustration. In 1998, when his music was stalled due to an over-use injury, he enrolled in the Graphic Design Certificate program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where he studied 2-D design, color theory and advanced drawing under Maggie Fitzpatrick and illustration under Joe Landry. After completing the Graphic Design program, he worked in the Boston area for seven years as a Graphic Designer, Art Director and Illustrator. During this time, he began devoting much of his spare time to making and studying art, first in pastels and later in oils. In January of 2006, hIe moved to northern Maine to focus on art full time. He converted an old potato house on his property into a studio and gallery where he currently displays his work and teaches classes in drawing and painting throughout the year.

I am honored to have my painting “Nevermore” selected for this year’s New England Collective juried exhibition at Galatea Fine Art in Boston. The exhibition is now featured on Artsy, where you can explore the work of all the participating artists and learn more about the exhibition. The exhibition will also be on view at Galatea Fine Art in Boston’s SoWa Arts District from August 6 through August 30. If you’re in the greater Boston area this month, I hope you’ll have an opportunity to stop by.

I will be at the Book and Brew Cafe in downtown Houlton with copies of my new book “Drawing is Everything”. Saturday July 18 from 1:00 to 3:00. I will be giving a short talk about drawing: what it means to me, why it matters, and how it can change the way we see the world, and I will read one or two essays from the book and answer any questions. I will also be leading a fun, beginner-friendly drawing activity that will allow participants to experience drawing as an act of creativity and personal expression. No experience is necessary. If you've ever said, "I can't draw," this is for you.

And, of course, Book and Brew Cafe’s fine selection of coffee, tea, and other delicious beverages will be available.

Afterward, I'll be available to sign books and chat with anyone who'd like to stay. I will also have copies of my first book “Images and Words” available to purchase.

“Drawing is Everything” is an exploration of drawing as more than technique or image-making. Through a collection of essays paired with original drawings, mostly pastels, artist and educator Frank Sullivan reflects on process, creativity, observation, failure, intuition, and the lifelong practice of learning to see. Blending personal stories with insights gained from decades as both an artist and teacher, “Drawing is Everything” invites readers to reconsider drawing not simply as a skill, but as a way of engaging with the world.

I always mix the colors for each painting before I begin to actually paint. This usually takes several hours over the course of two or three sessions. I put a lot of thought into how all of the colors will relate to one another and what role each will play in the composition. Which will be the dominant colors, which will play smaller, supportive roles, which colors will get along with each other and which ones will be antagonistic. Usually, once I begin painting and it starts to take a life of its own, I make adjustments and sometimes I will end up not using a particular color or mixing a new color that wasn’t part of the original plan. This painting ended up going completely off script and by the second day of painting, I had mixed an entirely new set of colors than what I originally had. It can be a little unnerving when a painting starts to pull me in a completely different direction than I had originally intended but I think it’s important to follow along and see where it leads.

I’m quite pleased with this one.
