Hello Friends,

It's with a heavy heart that I let you know of the passing of one of our most treasured members of the BOTMA organization, Frank Daniels. Frank was our talent booker and host for 22 years, so if you've walked through our doors, you've probably seen Frank.

Here are the details about his funeral.

We'll be enjoying the great outdoors this month, and through August for the Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association of NJ!

It's an informal gathering to jam with some old friends and make some new friends. Bring your acoustic instruments, and a song or two and join in the musical fun!

We'll be at Thompson Park in Lincroft. Look for us at the Theater Barn. Drive through the park, and it'll be down quite a ways on the right. Everyone is welcome, jammers and audience members. It's might be a little warm, so feel free to bring a cooler with non-alcoholic beverages and a snack or two. This is an outside event, so please bring your own chairs. We hope to see you there!

We were very lucky to have Fish & Whistle do the final set for our indoor season. They really did themselves proud!

Our organization provides a place for musicians to meet and play music. And on this date, the fiddle player was someone the band met at the jam, and were so enthralled with her playing that they asked her to join them onstage. That's where the magic happens!

Did you know that two of the members of Sawmill Run are trustees of BOTMA? That's right, they are righteously representing the Old Time side of the Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association of New Jersey!

I don't know how many songs and tunes they know, but I do know they have an absolutely encyclopedic knowledge of the music. They perform it so well, and are always fun and engaging. Thanks for a really fun set!!

Last Sunday we had our final indoor music festival of the 2023-2024 season.

We were delighted with the musical stylings of Ruth Ann Knoll, who performed a Patsy Cline tribute. She said she was nervoous, but she didn't have any reason to be. She really killed it!! Thank you Ruth Ann and the rest of the band. It was a terrific set!

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization. I would like to publicly acknowledge one outstanding volunteer who is celebrating 18 years with us, Trudy Felsmann.

You might not know her name, but you know her smiling face. She is the first person to greet everyone as they enter the auditorium and pay their entrance fee at the ticket table. She is the person who sets the tone for what is going to be happening that day, and it’s always a positive one. She greets everyone with a smile. She listens to every performance and is always encouraging to our musicians who donate their time to perform on our stage.

You might not know that behind the scenes she is also our Treasurer and a Trustee. She has done a wonderful job, and thanks to her we know exactly where we are financially, and she makes certain all of our bills are paid on time. We also asked her to become a Trustee, because she knows everything that is happening, and because of her longevity has a wonderful perspective on how we can best continue to operate and fulfill our monthly musical aspirations.

I'm counting the days until our last indoor music festival of the 2023-2024 season! Join us this Sunday, May 19th to be part of the fun.

Our featured band today is Sawmill Run, who will be playing onstage at 2:30. They are an old time string band, and they are guaranteed to have your fingers and toes tapping to their tunes. Band members include Ron Stevenson, Kenneth Forrest, Richard Smith, and Denise Warren.

They are the moderators of our monthly old time jam here at BOTMA. In additon, they run jams in Freehold at the Oakley Farm. You don't want to miss this band!

This Sunday , May 19th we are having our final indoor music festival of the season. If you haven't been able to make it yet, this Sunday is one you won't want to miss!

We are going to have a very special country music set presented by Ruth Ann Knoll. She and her band are going to do a deep dive into the music of the one and only Patsy Cline. This set will really be a wonderful tribute to her and her music.

Be ready to hear your favorite Patsy tunes, including:
Walkin' After MIdnight
Tennessee Waltz
Foolin' Around
I Fall to PIeces
Crazy
and others to tickle your fancy. She's bringing a five piece band with her, including a pedal steel player. This is going to be a wonderful set, and you'll want to get there for her 1:45 start time. The show starts at 1 pm, so I would come early to get a good seat.

Band members will include Barbara Paskin on guitar and harmonies, Michael Rosenow on bass, Alan Struthers on pedel steel and of course Ruth Ann singing her Patsy inspired heart out!

Doors open at 12 noon, and the show starts at 1 pm. We'll have lots of more great music after Ruth Ann, which will run until 5 pm. Tickets are $8 at the door.

There will also be a Jamming Workshop for novice pickers, a Strictly Bluegrass moderated jam and an Old Time Jam. We have plenty of rooms available for pickers bringing their guitar, banjo, madolin, dobro, fiddles and basses. Join the fun!

Jim Mills has passed away unexpectedly at 57.

My heart hurts for all those in his family and in the banjo community saddened by this news.

As my father Spencer Nitchie also unexpectedly died at 57, I know personally how shocking and upsetting this turn of events must be for so many people.

There aren't any words to make it better, but wishing peace to all who knew him or knew of him. My condolences to you and my respects to this great man honored by the banjo community.

-Sofia Nitchie, BNL

P.S. I'm posting the link to his obituary where you can pay your respects. See the comments
