I may be almost two months late, but I had to share some photos from our last Masterworks of the 23/24 season. What a pleasure and honor it was to perform Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto with pianist and the ! For those of you who don’t know the piece, or haven’t run into yet: the second movement features only the solo piano and one cello. Collaborating with MIchelle on this piece was one of my highlights of the season, and was a rare chance to bring chamber music (my favorite!) to the orchestral stage. Shout out to our fearless leader and my amazing colleagues in the cello section!! Looking forward to everything that next season will bring!

🎶Rochberg String Quartet No. 3
🎼Dec ‘23 + Jan ‘24

If there’s one piece that defined my entire 23/24 season, it was definitely Rochberg 3rd String Quartet. What started as an obsession when I first heard it as a student at Eastman FINALLY manifested a performance 20 years later here in Little Rock!

It was not an easy road putting it together. We started rehearsals in September ’23, hoping to perform at in November, sometimes rehearsing 3x a week to try and get it all figured out. By the time our WWT performance rolled around, we had to cancel and reschedule since several of us got sick…which actually worked out in our favor, since we got another several weeks to keep working on it 😂

WWT performance was such a fun night! We paired it with Beethoven Op. 132 slow movement, Bartok 4th Quartet pizz movement, and a few holiday quartet arrangements by Jeremy Crosmer (it was a few days before Christmas!) It was so fun to present this piece where I’ve seen (and participated in) so many fun shows.

In not one of my better planning decisions I then packed up and went to Australia and New Zealand for 3 weeks with Scott, with scheduled arrival back in the US 3 days before our River Rhapsodies performance at the . Turns out I got lucky and it snowed in Little Rock the day after we got back which means everything shut down and we postponed the concert for a week, which gave us ample time to put things back together as necessary.

Rochberg 3 is truly a special piece that I hope all string players will get to work on at some point. It is probably one of the most fulfilling pieces I have ever performed and it was a privilege to get to do it with some of my closest friends. Honestly, I can’t wait until we get to do it again, and I hope its not going to be 20 more years!!

Busy weekend performing Bloch: Prayer and Nigun with the always amazing Hee-Kyung Juhn at Trinity United Methodist, and an entire program (twice!) with Arkansas Chamber Singers, Marc-Andre Bougie, and Kiril Laskarov! Now its one day to recover before a full week of Star Wars with Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Geoffrey Robson, plus a Children's Concert with Valery Saul. Never a boring moment here in Little Rock!

So fun performing Saint-Saens Piano Quartet yesterday with Naoki Hakutani, Meredith Maddox Hicks, and Tim MacDuff. Super fun piece and great to perform with Mer and Tim since I have been away from the quartet this year. BONUS: this was one of our last performances before the Great Cancellation, so it was amazing to revisit and have a do-over!!

What a thrill to perform Damase: Sonata for Cello and Harp with Alisa Coffey last night for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra River Rhapsodies Series!! I hope we can do it again!!!

Also got to turn pages for Katherine Williamson and John Krebs performance of Franck Violin Sonata, and they were amazing!!!

FUN FACT: Katherine came up to University of Arkansas in Fayetteville when I did a recital that featured the Franck Sonata (7years ago?!?!?) and she turned pages for me! (Including two contemporary solo cello pieces that I literally could not turn for and didn’t have memorized 😬) Happy to return the favor last night!!
