🎶Rochberg String Quartet No. 3
🎼Dec ‘23 + Jan ‘24
If there’s one piece that defined my entire 23/24 season, it was definitely Rochberg 3rd String Quartet. What started as an obsession when I first heard it as a student at Eastman FINALLY manifested a performance 20 years later here in Little Rock!
It was not an easy road putting it together. We started rehearsals in September ’23, hoping to perform at in November, sometimes rehearsing 3x a week to try and get it all figured out. By the time our WWT performance rolled around, we had to cancel and reschedule since several of us got sick…which actually worked out in our favor, since we got another several weeks to keep working on it 😂
WWT performance was such a fun night! We paired it with Beethoven Op. 132 slow movement, Bartok 4th Quartet pizz movement, and a few holiday quartet arrangements by Jeremy Crosmer (it was a few days before Christmas!) It was so fun to present this piece where I’ve seen (and participated in) so many fun shows.
In not one of my better planning decisions I then packed up and went to Australia and New Zealand for 3 weeks with Scott, with scheduled arrival back in the US 3 days before our River Rhapsodies performance at the . Turns out I got lucky and it snowed in Little Rock the day after we got back which means everything shut down and we postponed the concert for a week, which gave us ample time to put things back together as necessary.
Rochberg 3 is truly a special piece that I hope all string players will get to work on at some point. It is probably one of the most fulfilling pieces I have ever performed and it was a privilege to get to do it with some of my closest friends. Honestly, I can’t wait until we get to do it again, and I hope its not going to be 20 more years!!
