Black. Lives. Matter.

Racism is not an inherent human behavior. It has to be carefully cultivated and nurtured by hate. Racism has no place in this world, and it certainly doesn’t have any place in theatre.

In 1950, “South Pacific” won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The powerful words from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s song, “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught” ring just as true today as they did 70 years ago.

“You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught before it's too late
Before you are six or seven or eight
To hate all the people your relatives hate
You've got to be carefully taught”

Mandy Patinkin singing the song Carefully Taught from South Pacific.

We in community theater operate in an industry where one of the only tangible ways a theater has to say "Thank You" to the actors and technicians and other volunteers who make their shows possible is to give them comp tickets to the show. So we at Precipice Theatre are so proud to join other community theaters tonight in thanking these three fabulous ladies who have made a particularly positive impact on our community. And a very special "Thank You" goes out to Dark Night founder Vincent Insalaco and ACT for creating this new way in which we, as a community, can celebrate everyone who makes volunteer theater happen here in central Arkansas. Cheers and THANK YOU!

We are thrilled to honor these three lovely ladies as our 2019 Dark Night Nellie Award Honorees! All three of these women are and have been heavily involved in our community theaters, on and off stage, and their credits showcase their dedication. Come join us on Monday, November 4 to pay homage to our honorees!

Precipice Theatre troupe member, James Norris, has worked with Jamie Scott Blakey in her roles as a Board Member and Interim Artistic Director and Show Director at The Weekend Theater for years, and her passion for theater and her love for the *people* who make community theater happen has always been a beacon for what volunteer theater can and should always be. We can't wait to share the love with you this Monday at Dark Night 2019, Jamie Scott!

Jamie Scott Blakey is one of our 2019 Nellie Award Honorees! As her bio states in every program of any show she is involved in, “Jamie has done everything in the theatre from directing to sweeping the stage floor after strike and loves it all!” She has been involved with productions at Conway Community Arts Association, Conway High School, The Weekend Theater, Community Theater of Little Rock and Benton Royal Players and that includes three years as Artistic Director of The Weekend Theater and continues to serve on the Weekend Theater Board. Along with her love of the Arts, Jamie is also devoted to her family – not only her husband, children and grandchildren, but most especially to her theatre family. “There are no words that express how deeply I love my theater family – true friendships and unending love and support.”

When Heather D. Norris guest-directed WAR PAINT at Studio Theatre earlier this year, just before opening, a power-surge wrecked havoc on the lighting system, and it was Dena Kimberling who came to her rescue. That's just who Dena is, and she couldn't be more deserving of a Nellie Award. We can't wait to celebrate you this Monday at Dark Night 2019, Dena!

Dena Kimberling is one of our 2019 Dark Night Nellie Award Honorees! Dena has been involved in the theatrical lighting
industry since 1986 where she started her professional career at Stageworks. She is now the owner of Let There Be Light here in Little Rock! She has also been very active with the drama ministry at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.
