✨ You’re Invited! ✨ Join us on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 5 PM for the opening reception of 🖤 The New Brownies’ Book: The Exhibition - A Love Letter to Black Families 🖤

This inspiring celebration of heritage, childhood, imagination, art, literacy, and the enduring beauty of Black families was adapted directly from "The New Brownies' Book: A Love Letter to Black Families," a NAACP Image Award-winning anthology compiled by sociologist Dr. Karida L. Brown and acclaimed artist Charly Palmer. The 2023 publication reimagines "The Brownies' Book A Monthly Magazine for Children of the Sun," the pioneering 1920 children's periodical created by W.E.B. Du Bois, Jessie Redmon Fauset, and Augustus Granville Dill to uplift Black youth.

This museum interpretation of the modern anthology features essays, poems, photographs, paintings, and short stories from over 50 contemporary Black creators and artists. It celebrates the joy, depth, history, and resplendent beauty of the Black experience, serving as an affirming treasure trove for readers of all ages!

Part of our incredible “Barbie and Friends” display from Vintage Barbie Museum is the groundbreaking debut of the first Black Barbie. So, what better way to celebrate than to explore the women behind her creation?

In partnership with CALS Ron Robinson Theater , a special free screening of “Black Barbie: A Documentary” will be showing at the Ron Robinson Theater on September 23rd at 7:00 pm.
This incredible film celebrates the momentous impact three black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand as we know it. Through these charismatic insiders’ stories, the documentary tells the story of how the first Black Barbie came to be in 1980, examining the importance of representation and how dolls can be crucial to the formation of identity and imagination.

Emceed by Little Rock’s very own Verda Davenport, you won’t want to miss this night! And a special treat: all movie attendees will receive a ticket for free admission to the museum valid starting September 25.

If the theme is “Fashion Is Art,” then the presence of Amy Sherald feels inevitable. Making her second Met Gala appearance, she wears a custom look by Thom Browne inspired by her own 2013 painting "Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance)." Rather than a designer interpreting a work of art, the artist interprets her own image through dress.

🍸 Enjoy a curated drink menu by Have Bar Will Travel featuring spirits from the award-winning Delta Dirt Distillery. Come for the spirits, stay for the conversation, and experience a multimedia survey of 13 powerhouse Black women artists. 

• TOMORROW (Saturday, May 2) @ 11:00 AM: Join us for “The Emerging Spirit: A Dialogue on Being.” This panel discussion features two of our exhibiting artists: textile artist Alice Aida Ayers and metalpoint artist Marjorie Williams-Smith.
