I’ve been gentle with my son these past few months as I feel something evolving within my art, but while I wait, I always have to be creative. I have been using Lego as an outlet for my creativity. Building has brought a piece another type of therapy so to speak. It is also introduced me to a beautiful community of adult fans of Lego. That being said, I saw the Mona Lisa in person. I was not impressed. I think because I thought she was going to be so much bigger lol. When I saw the set for the Mona Lisa, my mind immediately went to. I want to make her black and in doing so I realized if I make her hair black her robe being black would be too much black and now I gotta change that which then said I needed to change a bunch of colors. So I sit on a mission to re-create the Mona Lisa as a black woman. It has been a journey to say the least, but I am so happy with the results. I’m excited to see what’s gonna emerge from my art. Introducing Mo’Na Lisa.

THEir Last Supper (Spoken Word Tribute)
Honoring Black History Month
A monumental 13ft x 6.4ft painting created in the manner of da Vinci.

This piece is a tribute to 13 lives taken by racial injustice:

George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Trayvon Martin. Oscar Grant. Sandra Bland. Michael Brown. Tamir Rice. Tyre Nichols. Stephon Clark. Eric Garner. Ahmaud Arbery. Philando Castile. Alton Sterling.

My cousin, Agnolia B. Gay, wrote and performed a spoken word poem for this work, and in this video she speaks to each of the 13 with depth, clarity, and truth.

This video is almost 13 minutes long.
And it is meant to be watched with intention.

My art talks to me. This collaboration piece started by Robert Simmons, had me in a chokehold. I wanted to do something to make them stand out before I began using oil paint & mixed media. I use acrylic paint as an undercoat to help me see the colors I want to bring to life. I don’t normally do a lot of backgrounds, but I’m loving how this collaboration is coming to life. You’ll get to see the reveal at Robert’s art show Ethnic Notions Fine Art Gallery & Multicultural Bookstore in November.
