We had a great time in Ilion at our last Reel Thing of the season!!!

Thank you to everyone who came out, and a big thank you to Keith of the Ilion Fire Department who hooked us up with power and bathrooms! He was so helpful and generous and we’re really thankful for all his support! And a big thank you to Kevin for letting us use his land!

Thank you to Risa & Frank, our technical directors, to Mike Cecconi, our trusty announcer, to Erika Hoffman for all of her hard work, and to Matt Trombley for being a big support with Thing!!!!! Without all of you this thing wouldn’t have been possible! You guys made it easy, you made it fun, and you were the best Reel Thing crew anyone could have ever asked for.

A huge thank you to Chris & Devan at Valley Cinemas who helped us secure all the movie rights and who donated all those little bags of movie popcorn for each showing! We’re so lucky to have had the backing of these two!!!!

Thank you to all the libraries who helped us coordinate and promote the event, and to the village boards of each town for working with The Art Thing to make sure each event happened timely, safely and without a hitch!

And a big, big thank you to each and every one of you who came out to support this outdoor movie summer venture and shared in the love of film in all these communities in our loving Valley! Without all of you, this Thing wouldn’t have been a Thing at all!

And last but not least, thank you to CNY Arts for granting us the funding for this project. We’re so grateful we got to do this, and we’re looking forward to doing it again next summer🥹

To anyone who was able to attend two or more Reel Things, we’ll see you in December for the mystery movie at Valley Cinemas in Little Falls. We’ve decided we want our honorary Reel Thing members to vote on which movie we should show! Stay tuned, we’ll let you know when and where you can cast your vote!

And if you absolutely loved the Reel Things and you want to keep these kinds of Art Things around, accessible and free in the Mohawk Valley, be sure to give this Sept during Mohawk Valley Gives!!!!

Love,

-The Art Thing

❤️

SAVE THE DATE!!!!

The Art Thing is having their Mohawk Valley Gives fundraising party on Thursday, September 17th at Paradise Eatery in Herkimer!!!

From 5PM-8PM come enjoy DJ Mitch spinning some tunes on the patio of Herkimer’s newest haunt! Grab some food, grab a beer or a glass of wine or a smoothie to celebrate The Art Thing’s 2026 MVG event with all of us and Thing too!!!

Our community fundraising goal this year is $30,000!

This year’s challenge goal from Upmobility Foundation: If at least 100 individual people donate to The Art Thing during Mohawk Valley Gives, Upmobility Foundation will unlock another $20,000!!!

That means TAT has a chance to raise $50,000 this MVG to keep bringing free Art Things to more people in more places across the Mohawk Valley!!!!

Every single person counts! Whether you give $5, $10, $25, $100 or $1000, whatever gift you can give helps move us toward our goal of $30,000, and makes you one of the 100 people standing up and saying: “I believe in The Art Thing!”

Your support helps us pay local artists, keep participation free, bring fun programs into more communities, build our equipment to take our Things on the road, and keep dreaming up whatever wonderfully weird Thing comes next!

Oh yeah, and it helps us keep the big yellow Thing here on our planet 🌎 he eats a whole truckload of Peeps before noon everyday, but only the yellow ones!

We hope to see you at our event, and if not we hope you will be one of the 100 people who supports The Art Thing during the giving week of MVG:
Sept 14-Sept 18!

By supporting TAT you’re supporting a whole lot more than The Art Thing, you’re supporting all the people and communities that make it possible!

So come on, let’s do this Thing!!!!

See you so soon Ilion!!!!!

We’re so grateful to be doing this Thing, and to have spent most of our summer bringing it to these Mohawk Valley communities!

We’re in awe of all the community support, and all the new friends we’ve made along the way!!!!

And thanks for being so kind to Thing! It’s not always easy being a big and yellow non conformist and finding human t-shirts that fit your irregular shape and size! We’re lucky he’s in our corner!

We’re so looking forward to making even more new friends in the Ilion community for yet another gorgeous night, one of the few left of gorgeous summer nights around these parts, to celebrate the art of film and connection and community under the stars!! 🌟

Don’t miss seeing the classic Hook this Friday for TAT’s very last Reel Thing of the summer!!!!

Thank to everyone for their support, their love, and their continued faith and fight for community!!!

And thanks to CNY Arts -without them none of this would have been possible!!!!!!

Before we get to Mike’s bio…we just want to announce that today is his birthday! If you see this man, wish him the best!

In short, Mike Cecconi is a writer, an arts facilitator and performer. Of course, he’s nearly 6’6”, so short might be the wrong word. If nothing else, he’s been a lot of different people trying to learn how to craft a good story and to be a mostly-decent person along the way. He has a TV/Film degree from Newhouse at Syracuse he’ll be paying off as long as he breathes, spent a handful of years on the lowest rung of the film industry in LA, less than two years as sort of an art bum in New York City.

Along the way, he accumulated the world’s least-significant legit IMBD profile in history, poetry published on three continents, a one-man show at the Rochester Fringe, a TedTalk on the value of comedy, a couple of empty bank accounts, a handful of self-published comics and small press published poems, a handful of exes, a few small writing awards and literary journal publications, a couple dead automobiles and the tendency to always temper his brags with self-depricating humour. Along the way, he failed at trying to be a 911 operator, was way too good at being a medical courier and a call centre operator to the point he had to quit before getting stuck via promotion, waited, matre’d’ed, barista-fied and a lot of other little things. In tall, Mike tries to experience life so he can create better and more humane jokes and stories. Sometimes it even works!

Currently, he’s back in his hometown, helping family care for family, working at the LF library while running its short story group, running Stage Time Trivia at the Renaissance Bar and occasionally pitching in as an announcer and/or writer with the fine human beings at the Art Thing. Trying to train his mom’s dog out of the zoomies feels like his full time gig. His favourite spot to read poems or stories or jokes is the amazing Tramontane Cafe.

In short, Mike loves making up little stories, helping people make up little stories and trying his best to help people with the weird little skills he has picked up along the winding path of life!
