Happy International Rug Hooking Day!

I’m still here. But I’ve been navigating some difficult decisions and transitions with my elderly parents (in addition to dealing with a flare up of a chronic condition of my own) which has limited my time and mental bandwidth for making art. So my slow art has become even slower! This is a detail on “Lundi”, which I did finish recently.

The journey I’ve been on these last months has brought a silver lining in the form of a shift and clarity in how I’m thinking about my time and my art. I plan to start posting a bit more again and soon I’ll share the piece I’m working on now.

As the social media landscape changes, I have decided to close my studio page here on Facebook. To follow my work, find me on Bluesky .bsky.social. I am also on Instagram … for now.

I took an unplanned posting break for a few weeks, giving myself some space by not having social media on my to do list. But I have been working away on this project when I can. At this point I hope to be able to turn this over in the next couple of weeks to the person who will be making the wood bench it will go on. I’m ready to dive into some pieces that I’ve had on hold!

Progress check on the whale piece. I have a strip of carpet tack installed on a wall in my studio so I can hang up work in progress and look at it up close and up to 12.5’ away (and even further if I step out onto the patio). Looking at it from varying distances helps me critique my work and the design decisions I’ve made. At the end of a hooking session, I hang the piece and go through my self-critique questions, jotting down any notes about things I want to tweak or think about further. Those notes are where I jump in the next time I sit down to work. Today my notes include two areas for slight changes and one design aspect that remains a question mark for me.

By far the best part of my Sauder experience was taking Susan Feller’s Guided Residency. Working with her has both expanded and honed my thinking about art, myself as an artist, the art I’m making, and the directions I want to go. It exceeded my expectations and I can’t say enough great things about it!

1) “January Journal - The Gift of Fiber Friends”, designed and hooked by fellow residency cohort member woolypath Susan Spieldenner. I like the way the pops of bright orange/pink and blue balance the duller yellow and red. Her background has a quiet rhythm of its own with subtle circles.
2) “Tulips”, designed and hooked by fellow residency cohort member liptakschyl1 Marty Liptak. I like the way this design is simple but strong. The sculpted, curvy tulip forms contrast with the strong V lines of the stems and leaves. To me, the curved forms in the border direct my attention even more toward the tulips.

One of my favorite parts of my time at Sauder was attending gallery talks. This is Charlie Dalton speaking about his work, which was one of the Special Exhibits. It was so interesting to hear him recount the evolution of his work and the personal stories he tells with his art.

The gallery talks are invaluable — an opportunity to hear from an artist and ask questions, leading to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art. Charlie’s style and themes aren’t at all similar to mine, but his talk had me considering what I heard and how that applies (or not) to my own work and thinking.
