The revival of Singing on Grandfather began in an ordinary moment. "We were eating breakfast," Owen Gwyn recalled. She was reading the local newspaper when she came across an announcement that Singing on the Mountain, the beloved annual gathering that had endured since 1924, would conclude after its 99th year. "I read in the paper that Singing on the Mountain was coming up, and it was its 99th year, and it was going to be the final year," she said. When she read the news aloud to her husband, he said, “’You can't finish anything before the 100th year.'" Neither imagined that remark would spark a community-wide effort to rescue one of Appalachia's oldest gospel traditions."
