WHAT'S IN STORE?

As I mentioned in my last post, the only pumpkins I have available now are ones that were reserved for my online customers. Notice of the online restock is first made known to subscribers, then later to social. After a week I'll then make usold ones available in the studio here.
But the shop shelfs here are stocked and ready. I know a lot of you are already shopping for Christmas and pottery always makes a great gift.

So much to do!

Every last pumpkin sold this past weekend (except for the ones that I reserved for on-line sales - I can't neglect my distant customers). I intended to hold off and reserve some for the upcoming weekend, but that proved difficult as I had a steady flow of folks on Saturday.

Then I thought, well I suppose I could start immediately on another large batch of them to be ready in another 2 weeks. But here it is, Wednesday already and all I've managed is to photograph work to upload to the website, make a dozen mugs, and work on custom orders.

So, I gave up the idea of making more punkins (that would consume the next week and a half and set me back that much more), and instead focus on finishing off custom orders, restock the website, and get busy on Nov and Dec work.

STOVE BLACK. I neglected to promote my new-for-this-year black pumpkins. These are entirely unglazed, and made with a clay that fires to this earthy matte black! Add to, or start your collection with one of these.

The early birds were in line before the shop was open Friday/today, and by end of day the supply was whittled down quite a bit. But there are still a good dozen or so available for Saturday!

A SAMPLING. Available this weekend.

I going to hold back about half of what I've made - so that I can also have some available for online sales, and for next weekend.
With any luck I'm hoping to do another round for later this month though.

So about 20 various pieces will be out this weekend. Prices slightly up from last year (from 28$ to 68$).

I made a lot more of the mini decorative pumpkins because they were so popular last year!

OPEN:
Fridays 3 to 7
Saturdays 10 to 5

Cutting little holes...
I suppose I could just drill holes, but anybody can do that. So I make them like this to further complicate my life!

Years ago I settled on this design because the shape is similar to the seeds of a pumpkin, and I can create an elegant, structurally strong design using just two cuts of the knife (well lots and lots of 2-cuts). Each cut though, leaves an edge that could end up as a sharp edge after it has been fired. So each one is beveled. And also, it just looks better.

All of this has to be done at a very specific stage in the drying clay. Too wet and the pieces would not cut cleanly, too dry and it can't be cut at all. So when each one reaches that stage it needs to be wrapped in plastic to halt any further drying until I can work on it.
This step ends up taking about an hour.

First pickings will be available this weekend.

Making and attaching. A pumpkin's gotta have a stem. So I make those stems.

This reel was made last year - and I've invented a few shortcuts and ways to make them look better this time around. Still it's a long process and by the time the stems are attached I've invested about 40 minutes so far, altogether.
And if I turn it into a luminary then another 45 minutes to an hour is added to the process.

A tedious and unglamorous step, but to get the right look - a step that can't be skipped.
From the point of making it on the wheel to the end of this about 20 minutes including sufficient number of hours for the clay to stiffen up a bit.
The piece of plastic on top is to keep the clay wet where I will later attach the stem.
Typically I'll make a batch of a dozen or so at a time and then keep watch on them to make sure they don't stiffen too much - usually covering them with plastic overnight.

Every pumpkin starts out like this. It's actually the quickest step in the whole process. After this it needs a lot of work before it begins to look pumpkin-like. Anyway, it's about all I've been doing lately.
I won't have any of them ready for this weekend, but if all goes well, and I don't sleep or eat - hopefully next weekend.
