Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery Dedicated to Sharing the Arts with the World through the Life and Vision of Birger Sandzen Nordfeldt, Lester Raymer, Raymond Jonson, and John Stuart Curry.

The art of Birger Sandzén is exhibited throughout the year, along with guest artists, special traveling exhibitions and works from the collection. More than 1200 exhibitions have been displayed since the gallery opened in 1957. In addition, gallery talks, chamber music concerts, docent tours, and educational programs are also an integral aspect of the Gallery's activities. Through the exhibits and

activities, the gallery seeks to continue the work of Sandzén by encouraging young and developing artists. Gallery docents strongly believe in educating the next generation of visitors today. The focal point of the Gallery's art collections is the work of Birger Sandzén. It houses the largest and most extensive collection of his oil paintings, watercolors, prints and drawings found anywhere in the world. It also has an archives composed of correspondence and other materials related to Birger Sandzen, his family and contemporaries. Among other artists represented in the collections are Henry Varnum Poor, Doel Reed, Carl Milles, B.J.O. The gallery also has an impressive collection of prints, ranging from European to American regionalist printmakers and a variety of art from Asia.

Pianist Po Sim (F***y) Head from Kansas City will perform works by composers from Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela at the Sandzen Gallery on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Head is a pianist and musicologist dedicated to uncovering and promoting the works of lesser-known composers, especially from Latin America. Her recordings include music by Peruvian composer Francisco Pulgar-Vidal and Ecuadorian composer Blanca Layana Gomez. She has performed both nationally and internationally, including a recent guest appearance at the Musicantes Festival in Lima, Peru.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, she earned her degree in Music Composition from Hong Kong Baptist University. She holds master’s degrees in Piano Performance and Musicology from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, and a doctorate from the University of Kansas. She is an adjunct instructor at Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, runs a private studio, presents at national conferences, and writes articles for journals and magazines.

The Smoky Valley Chamber Music Festival’s Faculty Artist Recital will take place this Thursday evening, May 21, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Sandzén Gallery and feature a concert of “European Threads.” The performers will be playing works by Robert Schumann, Bela Bartok, Edvard Grieg, and Lukas Foss.

Participating musicians include Joseph Genualdi on violin, Michael Mermagen on cello, Karen Hsaio Savage on piano, and more. The festival will take place from May 18th through the 23rd and includes a variety of events in Lindsborg.

Four new exhibitions open at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on Sunday, May 3, and continue through July 19, 2026. They feature an invitational figurative exhibition and shows of paintings by Anthony Benton Gude, Sarah Winkler, and Barry Fitzgerald.

A reception for the exhibitions will be this Sunday, May 3, from 2 to 4 p.m., with exhibition talks beginning at 2:30.

The Fairmount String Quartet will be at the Sandzén Gallery on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The group is comprised of Timothy Jones and Daniel Carrasco on violins, Ruben Balboa on viola, and Leonid Shukaev on cello. They will perform Antonín Dvorak’s celebrated American quartet (Op. 96), written in Spillville, Iowa, in 1893, as well as Joseph Haydn’s Rider Quartet (Op. 74 No. 3), and the Nocturne from Alexander Borodin’s Quartet No. 2.
