The cottage style was brought into use in The Arts and Crafts architecture of the late 1800s. Its success lay not in its imitation of past styles but in its adaptation of those styles to create homes that were simple, solid, and comfortable.

Recreational Hutting in Abbott, Maine

The urge to build a small hut and spend time around its fire pit is perhaps a way for a modern person to pick up the missing pieces of the evolution of habitation.

Mircea Eliade, in Symbolism, the Sacred, and the Arts, says, "The human dwelling imitates the divine dwelling. Every arctic house, every tent, and every yurt of northern Asia is conceived as situated in the center of the world: the central pole or smoke-hole signifies the axis mundi." He gives as an example the sacred initiatory hut of certain Algonquin tribes: "Its roof represents the celestial canopy, the floor represents the earth, the four walls the four directions of cosmic space. The construction of this sacred hut repeats the cosmogony because this small mound represents the world."

In children's earliest drawings, the child's body is often encircled by rounded, womblike shapes. Even before children start drawing recognizable houses, they are already distinguishing between themselves and the outside world. Later, when young artists are about three years old...they start showing the figures as being inside a 'house'. In these early renderings, the houses are still quite rounded in shape, sometimes resembling an old-fashioned bee skep.

'The hut appears to be the taproot of the function of inhabiting. It is the simplest of human plans...Indeed it is so simple that it no longer belongs to our memories...but to legend; it is a center of legend.' Gaston Bachelard

The change from the hut with a smoke hole to the house with a chimney corresponds with the change of human consciousness that occurred in Europe around 1300 C.E. Before that time, humankind was connected to the spiritual realms symbolized by the opening in the roof of the hut - the eye of heaven, the oculus.

Huts and houses, hearth and home
Humankind fashions under heaven's dome.
Bees have a hive and birds a nest,
Yet humankind ponders what is best?
