How to Forget

Some days, like these, it's harder to find
the strength to be glad
when all around you, there are storms,
bitter winds and unrelenting rain. But you must look for gladness in the little things–vermilion maple leaves scattered on the carpet like rose petals on your wedding day, wild purple asters
swaying in shadowy corners pierced with light, the crunch of acorns against pavement underfoot. And remember, the sky
is not falling.
It's still there, swirling above. Look to it
and may each unfolding layer
of gold and silver remind you
that you could forget,
if only for a moment,
the dampness of rain on your face.

I attended an inspiring, uplifting poetry reading featuring my friend James Crews at Gibson's Bookstore in Concord last night. I always feel grateful and welcomed among fellow poets and poetry enthusiasts and it's especially grounding to hear James read his poems.

By chance, I also met a writer who recognized me from Facebook. How cool to meet a follower in person! 😊

Monday Gratitude Poem

Today It Was

Frozen curls of copper ferns
Feathers of frost melting in late morning sun
A single leaf fluttering in freefall, then another
and another
Gold and yellows crinkling underfoot
Fading daylight stretched across burnt-orange hills
An amber half moon glowing in the indigo sky

October

Behold the past-peak colors
of autumn, brilliant in their own way,
how they take their time to turn
bit by quiet bit, blends of orange, copper-browns, sun-doused yellows,
shady greens still holding on, and underfoot, ruby reds, having already let go, glisten
with opals of October rain.

from "Only So an Hour," after Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay"

None but her supple leaves,
remnants of her radiance,
green and lush,
remains
to fill this confounding emptiness.
