As featured in the photo above, our 2019-2020 season starred Bobby Shew, trumpet, and Joey Gulizia, percussion. Unfortunately, the remainder of the season was cancelled due to restrictions following the emergence of COVID-19 as a pandemic. However, while most live music venues were shut down, the NJO took an innovative approach, broadcasting livestreamed concerts from the Auld Recreation Center.
Two events in April and May were hosted at the center, featuring the Young Jazz Artist winners from 2020 and 2021 who were unable to perform a live public concert with the NJO at the time. The band did play one live concert in the June of 2021 the Sheldon Art Gallery for Jazz in June. A livestream performance with the Young Lions Big Band at the Auld Recreation Center closed out the season.
The NJO took a break in the fall of 2021 before we returned in February of 2022 as live performances became more common. For this first performance back, we were joined by the Gulizia Brothers. Tony, keyboards and Joey, percussion were featured along with the Young Lions All-Star Band. The remainder of that season included a free educational concert at Pius X High School and an additional concert in June featuring John Tavlin, trumpet, along with the Young Jazz Artist winner.
This season, we’re celebrating 50 years of big band music with a thrilling concert series taking us through the decades. Join us for our FINAL CONCERT of the season on May 21st at 7:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel for our fifth concert of the season. Enjoy compositions from both current NJO musicians and other Nebraskan artists and support this year’s Young Jazz Artist! NJO musicians will be joining us for the concert, making for one of our most exciting seasons yet!
