Friday night, on the Lied stage, Wynton Marsalis received the Lied Center’s Artist of Distinction award. He is only the third person ever to receive it.

The award goes to an artist who has given us more than great performances. It recognizes someone who has taught students, collaborated with people across our state, invested real time in Nebraska, and lifted up others along the way. Wynton has done all of that, and in nine visits to our stage he has become part of this community.

This was a night we all shared. Thank you, Wynton, and thank you to everyone who filled the room. 🎺

Day one of Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra was one to remember👏

Orchestra member Paul Nedzela led a jazz master class, Wynton and Alexa Tarantino sat down with students to talk about the music, the work behind it, and what it takes to keep going, and the the Cornhusker Marching Band rehearsed for their big halftime show with the entire Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on the gridiron.

Concert tonight at the Lied, halftime performance on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. 🎺🏈

Eight times Wynton Marsalis has stood on the Lied stage. Friday will be his ninth. Each visit has left Lincoln with something to remember.

Over nearly forty years leading Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has done more than play the music. He won nine Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, the first ever awarded to a jazz composition. He also taught a generation of kids, from Sesame Street to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, to listen closely and fall in love with music.

Thank you, Wynton, for your artistry, your generosity, and the nights you've given this community. Congratulations on a remarkable tenure.

We'll see you Friday.
