AIA Symposium Closing 2018 Blog

Once again, as the leaves are falling and cooler winds bear down upon us, we close our annual
sculpture symposium at Andres Institute of Art.. .It is such a bittersweet time for us at AIA. We
rejoice as each sculpture is completed…we delight in our symposium closing party… and then
we say good-by to our newest sculptor friends.
After three weeks of breaking bread together, hiking the mountain, puzzling over their selected
stones, assisting them in bringing their visions literally stone -cold reality… their departures back
to their respective homes around the world leaves a loud silence at the Artists Studio… a
sudden hush after the last grinders stop and the backhoe is turned off.
The artists leave a part of themselves with us though… each time we lead a tour and share
stories about a sculpture, we remember it’s creator. We remember in whose home the artists
stayed, the jokes we shared, the meals we ate together, the stories they told us about their
family and friends around the world… We remember the funny inside jokes and the sense of
family that arises when we engage in a common cause. We remember their intense
concentration as they transformed hard New Hampshire granite into works of intriguing
beauty… and we give thanks!
Heartfelt gratitude to all who engaged- as artist, volunteer, celebrant or hikers stumbling
upon the scene… we call it all good!

Building Nature's FAIRY HOUSE

20th Symposium Begins
While we may be reluctant to say good -bye to summer, autumn reaches into the soul of every New Englander… we cherish the last harvest from our gardens… the last swim in the lake…the still warm rays of the sun… the early signs of fall catch our attention and prompts us into action. Like the busy squirrels stocking up nuts for the winter, we, too, have our fall rituals.

As we glory in nature’s splendor—the forests with their coats of many colors, the growing pumpkins and gourds, the first leaves ablaze with autumn colors, we also begin to anticipate the winter that is sure to follow. It is in this moment that we once again are reminded of the almost magical turn of the seasons – and delight in it. We live in a place that gifts us year- round with natural beauty… and we make the very most of all four seasons!

For those of us at Andres Institute of Art, autumn is an especially enchanting season. Amidst the glory of the fall colors we also are given the honor of hosting international sculptors for three weeks each year.

Volunteers from our local community step forward to provide housing, three meals a day, transportation, and endless conversations as the artists work their magic. They select NH granite from our property and use their imaginations, their years of experience, and hard physical work to create one-of-a-kind monumental size sculptures. These sculptures are permanent gifts to our community. Andres Institute of Art is free and open to the public from sun up to sun down all year round. The sculptures are placed along the trails of our 140 acres of what once was a popular ski hill.

For these three weeks, the artists, the volunteers, the granite, and the woodland trails become an amazing testament to the power of creation. The AIA International Sculpture Symposium honors the ability of art to build bridges and forge connections across all cultures.

We give thanks to all involved- whether artist, volunteer, host family, or appreciative hiker.
Please feel free to observe the artists at work for the next three weeks and to join us for the official unveiling of their sculptures Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2 pm.

Land of Imagination

Land of Imagination…
That surely describes the Andres Institute of Art!
Many visitors over the years have described our sculpture park as a magical, mysterious place. Hikers never know what critters, trees, flowers and one-of-a-kind sculptures await them along the wooded trails on our 140 acres. Each year our acclaimed sculptors from all over the world create one-of-a-kind monumental- size sculptures. Some of them are of a classic style (I’m thinking of “The Horse”) while others leave us wondering what their abstract forms really meant to the artist. Some of them make hikers smile (“Still Loading” or “Community and Diversity”) while others call us to be still and to gaze reverently as we take in its beauty (“Souls of Peace”).

No two are alike.

Where do these images come from? How do the artists conceive of these forms?

One element they all have in common: they were conceived in the rich imagination of our artists. Fleeting shapes…odd angles… distant memories… futuristic dreams… The artists seem to take their inspiration from everyday life… common objects… And yet these images move through their hearts and minds and emerge as mysterious beauty.

More than one artist has shared that they were inspired by our wooded trails… that our woodlands and vistas and rolling hills- and even the other sculptures… all sources of inspiration.

All these elements come together in the artists’ hearts and minds… all of their sculptures arise from their hearts and minds…from their imaginative responses to our land and all that we have gathered in our sculpture park.

Even our friends who do not claim the title of ‘artist’ find that hiking in our park calms their racing minds…soothes their hearts…inspires their soul… and opens up their sense of creative imaginings.

Some might agree…ours is a land of imagination indeed.
