Dreamland

I found some uhh… interesting images in some of the magazines and books I’ve collected for art journaling and allowed them to have their own page. A new technique I tried was to cut out and weave the items together, like how the penguin pops out of the frame.

I found these images in a Trader Joe’s flyer, Frog & Toad book, a children’s big question book, and an interior design book.

As we have said before, art journaling has no rules! The only material used on this page was graphite. The prompt given to me was to draw what inhabits my creative space.

Whatever amount of talent and time you have, you can art journal, I promise. This one felt like magic when I was making it! I used oil pastels to make an outline and went back in with watercolors. The oil pastels acted as a barrier and “waterproofed” that part of the page, resulting in a puddled look in some petals and different dimensions. This was a "quick" page. Other pages take up to 4 hours, but this one was maybe only 10 minutes.

I loved this image of a frog that I found in a book, and didn’t want to distract from it. Adding some leaves and florals around the edge, I was able to fill the page without taking attention away from the star of the show (not that you need to fill the whole page).

Creating calm out of chaos. KC Davis says in her book, “how to keep house while drowning” that every room is filled with five things. By breaking it down into these categories, resetting a room can be a little less daunting.

Trying a technique I saw on TikTok, I put paint on the page and used a wooden stick to pull the paint across the page. the background is then filled in with black paint, allowing the image to POP! According to psychology, our brains like to make sense out of nonsensical things, what do you see?

I drew inspiration for this page from a recent trip to the animal hospital with my dog, who had eaten peach pits off the counter (21 it turns out, and one can cause cyanide poisoning). I carved a linocut stamp of a peach pit especially for this page and played around with repetition. I tried to cement my emotions in this pages without directly stating them. Desperation, hope, worry, uncertainty.

Multi-media page: book pages, construction paper, and acrylic paint.
