This is what “Trust the Process” means while tattooing! While scrolling through my camera roll yesterday, I found this session progression on the wolf coverup I did a couple of years ago that i never posted. In total, this piece was around 12 hours of work, completed 4 hours at a time over 3 different sessions. What you see here is the end result of each one, and it can be a little nerve racking to say the least on both ends. I knew I was going to be able to do most of the color blocking by the end of the first 2 sittings, and then come back to add details and finishing touches in the final one. I was also *really* hoping that my client would trust me in the awkward, in-between stages and know that it wouldn’t stay looking that way. I’ve often described the process of a lot of my color work as being “a bunch of colorful nonsense until it all makes sense at the end” and after 8.5 years of tattooing, I still find that to be extremely accurate. It takes faith in your artist to see something like the first round and trust that it’s going to look the way you discussed in your consultation, and it takes a lot of faith in yourself and your skill AS the artist to look at that and feel like you’ve got this. Adding in the fact that this was a massive coverup makes that even scarier, but continuing with that trust in the process always makes it all very worth it!! Anyways, that’s my long ramble about this that I felt the need to share!! 💖
