I’m often asked how long it takes to make a mosaic. Well, let me break it down for you…
1. A trip to our favorite lumber mill🪵aka Siefker Sawmill
2. We rip our slabs of wood into “slats” and frames on the table saw. (My least favorite saw)
3. I research, design, draw, and way overthink the design!🤯
4. Choosing stains and paint colors. Again.. way overthink it
5. I proceed to estimate the size and amount of slats I need for the mosaic and begin the painting/staining process🧑🎨
6. Once dried (usually the following day), I sand the edges of each slat on my sander
7. The fun part!! I begin my mosaic!
Each piece is cut using one of 2 mitre saws depending on the size. Most everything is done on a 45 degree angle. Once I have my main pieces in it’s usually smooth sailing!⛵️ I sand the cut edges as I go and follow the design I’ve laid out or where my mind wanders. Each piece is secured with wood glue and pin nails to ensure stability.
8. After completed and the glue is dry, I cut off the edge pieces with my table saw and a hand made sled. (Again, my least favorite saw)
9. Framing:( Not enjoyable but totally necessary!
10. I normally spray my mosaics with 2-3 coats of polyacrylic directly after framing.🖼️
11. Installing hardware for hanging!!
That’s it! So how long does it take you ask? You do the math because I have no idea!!🤷♀️
