Broke-Ass Theatre

Broke-Ass Theatre Dynamic staged readings of topical plays. Sometimes irreverent. Occasionally raunchy. Always thought-provoking. Sometimes raunchy.

We'd fully mount these productions, but we're broke. But hey, human beings have been gathering around the community fire to tell/listen to stories for millenia, without huge, elaborate sets or falling chandeliers. So we invite you to pull up a chair, use your imagination, and join us around our metaphorical fire to listen to/experience stories you won't hear anywhere else in these parts. And becau

se your ass may be as broke as ours, admission is always FREE (though we will happily accept donations after the reading).

Broke-A$$ Theatre's debut production was "ART" at ArtSpace/Lima in February 2024. So happy to see it's getting a revival on Broadway this Fall, and what a cast!

2025 has been a super-busy year for directing and other projects, but look for Broke-A$$ to return in 2026 with play readings you won't hear/see anywhere else in these parts!

Although I hope to bring Broke-A$$ back this summer, here's what I'm doing right now.
Come join us!

Hello Broke-A$$ friends!
I've been on hiatus for a bit -- and will continue to be, as I direct two productions this winter/spring, and teach.
BUT -- I'm planning a season for sure, and hope to have a general audition in late April.
Now more than ever, stories matter. Because Broke-A$$ is tiny and essentially paid for out-of-pocket, we are not beholden to any government entity to fund us, telling us what plays we can and cannot read/produce. As the rules for National Endowment for the Arts funding is changing, larger theatres that rely on those funds are going to have restrictions placed on them regarding the kinds of shows and programs they can produce.
We will not be.
Stay warm, stay healthy, and stay tuned!

Hey Broke-A$$ Friends!
I know you haven't heard from us in a while. While we had hoped to squeeze in one more play reading in 2024, life happened while "we were busy making other plans" (thank you, John Lennon).
So looks like that's a wrap for 2024 -- 3 play readings isn't bad for a first season!
We plan to be back in 2025 -- most likely with a potential full season chosen, dates picked in advance, and an open call for readers for the season. Our season will most likely happen between May-October, given how busy we'll be with other projects during the winter and early spring (these bills aren't going to pay themselves!).
Until we meet again: VOTE. Enjoy the company of those you love as often as you can. Expand your capacity to love. Support the arts whenever, wherever, and however you can. Have a lovely holiday season, whatever you may celebrate. We look forward to seeing you all in spring of 2025!

Sending out a huge, Broke-A$$ Thank$ to everyone who joined us at The Occasional Acorn (the old Louie's) last night for our reading of Taylor Mac's, "HIR"! I am yet again reminded of the power of the arts to bring people together to provoke conversation and discussion, and to practice empathy. And I love that Lima has folks who are hungry for these experiences.

TRIGGER WARNING for Tonight's Reading: "HIR" contains dialogue concerning subject matter that may be stressful and/or upsetting for some folks, including domestic violence, r**e, PTSD, and su***de. We just want to make sure that folks don't feel blindsided by sensitive subject matter.
