The last song of the Kauaʻi ʻŌʻō still echoes through this story.

Pau: The Last Song of the Kauaʻi ʻŌʻō shares the story of a bird found nowhere else in the world. For thousands of years, its song was part of the forests, valleys, and living chorus of Kauaʻi.

As people, invasive species, and environmental changes reshaped the island, the Kauaʻi ʻŌʻō became increasingly rare. Scientists worked to document and preserve its song, but eventually, only one bird remained singing.

Then came a day when there were none. Pau.

Through beautiful illustrations and gentle storytelling, this picture book introduces keiki to an important part of Kauaʻi's natural history. It offers a chance for families to learn about a species that once called this island home and to reflect on our relationship with the plants, animals, and places that make Hawaiʻi unique.

Recommended for ages 3–7.

📚 Available at KAPA Native Books

What native bird or animal from Hawaiʻi do you think every keiki should learn about?

Sometimes all it takes is a little encouragement to find your place in the circle.

Featured Book: I Am a Bon Dancer
by Brandi-Ann Uyemura (Author), Amy Matsush*ta-Beal (Illustrator)

It's a young girl's first Obon festival. She loves the glow of the lanterns, the sounds of the taiko drums, and being surrounded by family and community—but when it's time to dance, she feels too shy to join in.

With the gentle encouragement of her grandfather, she learns that Obon is more than a festival. It is a time to honor those who came before us and remember that we are connected to generations of ancestors whose stories live on through us.

Beautifully written and illustrated, I Am a Bon Dancer is a touching story about family, heritage, belonging, and finding the confidence to step into the dance.

Available now at KAPA Native Books.

Stop by and explore books that celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, and stories that make Hawaiʻi so special.
