VFW Post 6337 - Licking, MO

There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them,and they were left to care for themselves.

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United S

tates. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI Bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, a member of the Licking VFW Post 6337 met with Officers of the Salem High School FFA Chapter. Post Commander Billie Krewson presented SHS FFA Chapter President James Heithold and fellow officers with a check for $1,000 to help promote academic excellence. The Salem FFA Chapter helps to develop young men and women for the future. These students are taught and experience a multitude of real-world skills that they will use in everyday life. Students learn responsibility (both individually and as a group), public speaking, business skills, and community service, among others. Mrs. Heather Johnson and Mr. Dalton Sanders spend countless hours in and out of the classroom to ensure students are prepared and well-rounded for the future.

Post 6337 makes educational contributions to public schools and students.

Despite the cold and blustery winds, our community gathered with warmth in their hearts to honor the brave men and women who have served our nation.

Thank you to everyone who stood tall, bundled up, and showed up—to remember, reflect, and pay tribute.

That spirit of unity and remembrance was alive and well today, proving that no weather can dampen our gratitude or our resolve.

“So long as two veterans remain, we shall gather.”
