✨Teacher Spotlight!✨ Resident Choreographer Lorna Horres is able to thoughtfully construct a ballet class so that each combination builds upon the one before it. She loves that moment in a class where a correction or piece of knowledge “clicks” for a dancer, and they master a technical element or artistic challenge that we’ve been working on. She also appreciates when her dancers bring their full performance quality to something as fundamental as pliés at the barre, so she knows they are truly living in the art form! This season, she is teaching many of our youngest ballet students and is working with our Senior Company. 🎉
About teaching, she writes: “Teaching requires a whole new toolbox of techniques separate from being a dancer oneself. During the many years of dance training, you learn how to hone your strengths and you know your weaknesses intimately. As a teacher, you are working beyond the scope of yourself and learning the best way to mold each individual, which requires a different type of focus and big picture thinking.” 🩰
About Lorna: She began her dance training at age 4 with Arlington Center for Dance (now BalletNova Center for Dance) in Arlington, VA, and she became a member of the pre-professional Center Dance Company in 2000. While her primary training is in Ballet and Pointe (Cecchetti, Royal Academy of Dance, and French methods) she has also trained in Modern, Jazz, Musical Theater, Character, and Contemporary dance. She has performed multiple corps and soloist roles, and her performance repertoire includes works by Bournonville, Fokine, Petipa, and Balanchine. Her favorite role that she performed was Princess Tsarevna in The Firebird. 👑 She attended the Princeton Ballet School’s Advanced Summer Intensive and was a member of the Arlington Fine Arts Apprentice Program. She continued to perform, teach, and choreograph for the Rhapsody Ballet Ensemble at the University of Virginia, where she graduated with a double B.A. in Foreign Affairs and History. 🎓
In her spare time, Lorna spends time with her young family, reading, gardening, and watching/attending performances of dance, of course!❤️
