Heroes can come in a lot of different shapes and hoof sizes. 🐎

Seabiscuit, a Kentucky-bred descendant of legendary Man o’ War, became a symbol of hope and inspiration for Americans across the country struggling under the Great Depression era. Though small and ungainly, the underdog would soon become a national contender, and in 1937, he would run the “Race of the Century” against favorite War Admiral.

An estimated 40 million Americans tuned into the radio—including President Roosevelt, who reportedly interrupted a cabinet meeting. Seabiscuit would go on to shoot past War Admiral and win by four lengths. The people’s favorite would run and win his last race in 1940 at the Santa Anita Handicap, the second-fastest time ever run on an American track for the distance.

Afterwards, jockey Red Pollard would say, “Don’t think he didn’t know he was the hero.”

We have a frightfully fun fall planned for you at the Philharmonic! 🍂

👻 October 22: The LexPhil Woodwind Quintet presents a free afternoon of spooky music at the Lexington Senior Center. Fayette County Residents 60+ can register by calling (859) 278-6072.

⚔️ October 24 & 25: Heroes & Villains explores the music of film's most legendary composers including Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and more. A costume contest, photo booth, and more await you in the lobby.

🎂 October 30: LexPhil officially turns 65! Join in the celebration—support the orchestra during our 65 for 65 campaign.

🎬 November 5: We're headed to the big screen as Bee Taylor and the LexPhil String Quartet : The Movie makes its one-night-only premiere at The Kentucky Theatre, presented by VisitLEX.

The Lexington Philharmonic is pleased to announce that the Lexington Philharmonic Players Association, American Federation of Musicians, Local 554-635 unanimously ratified a new three-year collective bargaining agreement on Monday, September 14, for the term 2026–2029.

Key provisions of the new agreement include:

- Musicians' annual wage will increase incrementally over the three-year term.
- Guaranteed services will increase, the Tenure-Track Period is revised to a 12-month period, and the grievance filing deadline is expanded.
- Overnight reimbursement for traveling musicians will increase in addition to incremental increases in mileage pay.
- Revisions to audition and artistic processes, and added protections for outdoor concerts including updated temperature limits.

LexPhil is grateful for the thoughtful work and cooperation on both sides that made this agreement possible, ensuring that LexPhil can continue bringing exceptional performances and meaningful programs to our community.

LexPhil would like to thank State Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe and Mayor Linda Gorton for their recognition at our opening concert of the 2026–2027 season.

Prior to the performance, Senator Bledsoe presented Executive Director Brooke Raby with an honorary senate citation from the Kentucky Senate recognizing and honoring LexPhil on the occasion of our 65th Anniversary season. Shortly after, Mayor Gorton declared to a full concert hall that September 18, 2026, would hereby be known as Lexington Philharmonic Day.

Thank you Senator Bledsoe and Mayor Gorton for your support of orchestra in Kentucky!

Explore the LexPhil MusicLab at Harvest Fest! 🌾

Historic Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill hosts their kick off to fall this weekend with hayrides, pumpkin painting, games, pressed c***r, and a multitude of other fall festivities to welcome in the autumn season. LexPhil is excited to present our interactive MusicLab, exploring sound and instruments, on Sunday, September 27, from Noon to 4PM.

And we’re off folks! 🎶 LexPhil’s 65th Opening Night was an evening of homecoming—both on stage and in the audience.

Thank you Ania, Mélisse, and the musicians for sharing your artistry with us. And thank you, our patrons, for supporting live orchestral music in our community for sixty-five years (and counting).

To look out into a full concert hall to welcome everyone back home was a truly special moment to share together. 💙

Modeled after Dr. George Zack’s iconic bow ties and accented with Meg Saunders' signature color, pink, musicians and others wore ribbons of remembrance during Friday evening’s performance.

Today, family and friends have organized a Celebration of Life for Dr. George Zack to honor his life and legacy. The service will be held from 1:30-3:30PM in Haggin Auditorium at the Mitchell Fine Arts Center at Transylvania University.
