Afterculture Theatre

Afterculture Theatre A site-specific, immersive theatre company tearing down walls and cultivating life among the ruins.

Afterculture Theatre devises site-specific, immersive performance experiences in non-traditional spaces. Our goal is to help make central Kentucky an incubator of creative innovation, where the arts are accessible, relevant, and affordable to all. We are committed to the use of theatre as a catalyst for social justice, transformation, and human self-actualization.

We at Afterculture are so saddened to learn of the passing of Pete Sears, a well known and beloved face in the central Kentucky theatre community. Pete's compelling portrayal of General Leslie Groves brought such gravitas to our 2017 production, TRINITY. We are thinking of his friends and family and grieving his loss with them.

Our lips understand
the water no longer flows for us
Our bellies understand
the dirt no longer feeds us
Our lungs understand
the sky no longer breathes for us
Our skin understands
the sun will not rest until all is consumed by fire
We have learned the story, true true
We have learned it with our lives

It's been two days since Strike for "Who Holds the Devil" and we're feeling the BIG release that comes after any major project has come to a close. But we also miss sharing this work with you, our audience! Thank you so much for being there with us.

Deep, overflowing gratitude to everyone who came and supported Afterculture this winter at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center. Thanks to each of our sweet and dedicated volunteers, to our Box Office staff, to all our patrons and donors. We are overcome... and cannot believe this endeavor was made possible through your love.

We hope you enjoyed the production. Please continue to engage with us as we rest and recover! What came up for you during or after seeing the show? What are you experiencing in your body or psyche in the days following? Do you have responses or questions? What do you want to see next from us?
Send us a DM or email [email protected]

In the meantime, if you love our work and are curious how you can support us:

1.) Join our mailing list! Send us an email with interest, and we will add you to our updates list.

2.) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook -- and tell your friends -- maybe leave us a rave review!

3.) Consider backing us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/afterculturetheatre
Give any amount per month as a sustaining donor and help make this work sustainable for us as creators in Central Kentucky. We are a small, scrappy non-profit and any little bit makes a huge difference.

Until next time 🌱

"If the whole world I once could see
On free soil stand, with the people free
Then to the moment might I say,
Linger awhile. . .so fair thou art."

Just one more chance to catch "Who Holds the Devil"! Come tonight to the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center. Show starts at 7:00pm. Only 23 tickets left!

Come celebrate the marvelous movement work, created in collaboration with our artists and Movement Director and Choreographer, JD Frost!

JD was raised in a German Opera house and continues their training in different forms of dance, voice, and performance arts, including ballet, tap, jazz, contact improv, Butoh, Deep Listening, classical voice, Viewpoints, Meisner, Chekhov, and devised theatre. JD is a stage and movement director for theatre and opera who understands theatre and dance to be sacred ritual and ceremony; a gathering to perform and to witness, remembering our collective past while visualizing and materializing the future we need to build.

Only one more chance to be part of the ritual of "Who Holds the Devil." Come be part! As audience, the ending of the story is held in the palm of your hands...

It’s time to introduce our fearless artistic director and company co-founder, Tay Schulz. Who Holds the Devil is the product of weeks of complex work, months of preparation, and years of dreaming. Tay has been the guiding force, inspiring leader, and visionary director behind all of it. So much of what makes a massive production come together happens behind the scenes, and Tay’s unbelievable dedication, talent, and hard work have been integral to our success. Not only have they managed wearing multiple hats with grace and fervor, but they are a gifted communicator, a true artist, and compassionate human being.
Just three shows left! Come see us tonight!
