Meet the cast of Pride and Prejudice! 💌
Say hello to Alison Dodges, our Mr. Bennet /Charlotte Lucas!
Charlotte makes very pragmatic choices about marriage, while Mr. Bennet has a more ironic view of it—did playing both roles change how you see those perspectives?
Well, I mean, Charlotte’s a young woman—old for that time and not being married—but she’s so practical. I think her perspective was very appropriate for her in her time, while Mr. Bennet is married to a woman who has been driving him crazy for years. So I understand that, especially being married over 30 years—you don’t always listen to your spouse.
How did you physically and vocally distinguish between Mr. Bennet and Charlotte Lucas on stage?
I’m hoping that it translates, but I have lowered my register for Mr. Bennet, and I have slowed my speech. I have attempted to adopt more male mannerisms—the way I walk and carry my shoulders. For Charlotte, I feel she’s very proper, so I stand very tall, shoulders back, chin up—even my walk. It’s much different compared to Bennet.
Which role did you find more challenging to portray, and why?
I have to say Mr. Bennet, because he is a man, and he’s kind of smart and lazy, and that doesn’t tend to be my nature. So I think those are the biggest reasons. I think Charlotte is much simpler and more straightforward. There’s a lot more depth, to me, in Mr. Bennet.
