Sacrifice, 2021, oil on canvas. I painted this image from a photograph that I took of a nurse and healthcare assistant in the Intensive Care Unit of the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK, whilst I was training as a medical student. It serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and sacrifices of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a tragic irony to this situation; the only time that colleagues were able to embrace one another was when they were wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). I am honoured that this work of art has been displayed at my alma mater, The University of Oxford Medical School.
