We had a blast at last week’s St. Patrick’s Day–themed painting class! The group that joined us made the two-hour session especially fun (as always!).

There’s one more class this spring semester on April 9 called “Swing into Summer.” The painting features a lush green tree with a rope swing—perfect for welcoming the warmer months.

Hi all! One of the many hats I wear is serving as Chair of the LC State Arboretum Committee. This month, the Arboretum is sharing posts about the committee members’ favorite trees in celebration of Arbor Day. Follow their page to see more and learn about some truly special trees!

🍂 Fall Favorite: The Ginkgo 🍂

As Arboretum Chair, Carrie Kyser finds it impossible to choose a single favorite tree—she loves them all! But when it comes to fall color, the ginkgo holds a special place in her heart. 💛

Why? Because of its famous “leaf dump.” Unlike most deciduous trees that drop leaves gradually, ginkgos form one protective layer across all their leaves at once. Then, with the right cold snap, they release every golden fan-shaped leaf in a single, stunning cascade.

You can spot ginkgos throughout campus, but the one pictured here is just west of ACW. Keep an eye out—we can’t wait for this year’s golden leaf dump! 🍁✨

You never know when you'll be asked to design a rattlesnake holding a baseball.

Sometimes social media (facebook, tik tok, twitter, etc) can be a deep dark hole of negativity. I want to share a moment when it was the exact opposite.

I love doing logos and graphics for organizations. I was recently contacted by a friend from high school, whom I probably haven't seen since I was 18, but we've remained friends on Facebook. Her son is playing on a new baseball team, and they needed a mascot/logo for shirts. She'd seen I'd done a logo for another one of our high school friends (shout out to Rapid City Schools Trap League) on facebook, and thought to ask me to do one for them.

Had we not had facebook, this connection would have never happened. Use these social media tools for good, not hate and evil. Use it to stay connected to people who matter to you in life. You never know when you'll be asked to design a rattlesnake holding a baseball.

And, meet Slider. He's the mascot for the Rattlers Baseball team in North Platte, Nebraska. Isn't he cute?!?!

(Cheers to Jackie Bergland)

I haven't done much design work lately, but one of my roles at my full-time job is being the Chair of the Arboretum Committee. On April 29th we hosted an Arbor Day celebration, where we planted a tree to commemorate a retired faculty member. It was a beautiful day, and a beautiful event, to celebrate someone who appreciates beauty.
