Hundreds of monarchs feed in a field of wild Canada goldenrod, refueling for their long migration. The monarchs that migrate back to Mexico in the fall are the great-great-grandchildren of the monarchs that left Mexico last spring.⠀What a miracle they are! Sadly, the population of monarchs has declined by an estimated 90% in the last 20 years and they are now considered endangered. Factors causing the decline are loss of habitat from development, herbicides that kill milkweed, the only plant monarch caterpillars can consume, and insecticide treatments on crops and homeowner yards. Planting a small patch of milkweed in one's yard could be the boost a monarch needs to survive.
