♥️About ReBelle:
“Multilingual, multinational and multi-talented”- Dub Missive
“Concert halls become sacred and jor several hours, people come together’”- Valley Advocate
“New, intelligent and trailblazing music”- Dirty Linen

💛A musical revolution rooted in love, forged in fire, ReBelle is guided by devotion. Co-founded by Manou Africa and Kalpana Devi, ReBelle weaves African liberation, Rasta consciousness, and visionary feminine power into a soul-stirring sonic force that transcends borders, languages, and genres.
Singing in Wolof, Creole, French and English, ReBelle’s music is ceremony, protest, and celebration in one breath.
Their lyrics are prayers for justice.
Their harmonies are weapons of beauty. Their rhythms are rooted in the ancestral drum, and their message is unwavering: Love for Humanity and Gaia.

💚From village festivals in West Africa to sold-out U.S. venues and global cultural convenings, ReBelle has shared stages with reggae legends and spiritual giants. But their true power lives in frequency.
This is sound as medicine. Music as activism. Art as liberation technology.

ReBelle is performing at the First Churches Sanctuary at 9pm on Wednesday - as part of First Night Northampton celebrations.

🌟♥️What we do as ReBelle is deeply sacred and powerfully important to us. Truly - it all comes to new life in astounding and elevated proportions when we get to and have the distinct honor of sharing our music with you.

🌟🧡The orchestration that arises when you and we are in the same room together - and ReBelle is pouring into, through and as us all is a Divine occurrence.

🌟💚Our music becomes OUR music - the sonic “I am because we are” declaration - a Muse born of our collective participation and presence.

🌟💛The invitation itself is a song that has already begun.

Our ancestral dance and our dance of the now is calling.

Love you all.

Love is a force of design.
It builds.
It directs.
It reconfigures the possible.
And focus is how we wield it.

See us in Woodstock NY tomorrow Sunday 10/10/21:
Manou and I met in 1994 at a Black Rebels (ReBelle used to be called, Black Rebels) band rehearsal. Thanks to my brother-in-law, Jeannot, who saw me walking down the Noho Main street one day and said, “Hey sister”… We introduced ourselves to each other and weeks later he asked me to come to a rehearsal and sing. Meeting Manou at that first rehearsal felt like catching up to a memory. He was in an instant familiar, like family, and everything in me loved him.
That was the year I’d been traveling back and forth to Montreal to work with the great drum healer, Yaya Diallo; I came in as one of three finalists in a National Endowment for the Arts award for innovative music in education; travelled back and forth to NY to rehearse and perform with the prolific composer and trumpet player, Wadada Leo Smith; formed a local performing arts collective and was invited to be guest artist in residence for a year at the Northampton Center for the Arts, which gave me free reign to use the arts space as often as I wanted for concerts and programming.
Before I met Manou, little did I know that same year he was writing music, assembling musicians to play his revolutionary songs, and working hard to afford recording studios and engineers to get his music out to the people. All while adjusting to life in the U.S., away from his Beloved Africa where he had already formed a formidable movement in livication to the teachings of Rastafari, Menen I, Marcus Garvey and a collective of powerful African ancestry. Manou had been lauded in the Senegal newspapers as a beacon in African reggae music- the foundation of Black Rebels/ ReBelle. He had already conquered the African Reggae Sunsplash stage & shortly after, here in the U.S. he was humbly learning to speak his 4th language, English, which he achieved with brilliant fluency on a new continent an ocean away from his homeland.
As I drove through a snowstorm to get to my first ever rehearsal with Black Rebels, ReBelle, it occurred to me I’d never given my voice over to singing lyrics written by other writers.
