Introducing ๐ฅ... LSO: MEET THE MUSICIANS
Gary Hudson is Principal Trumpet of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. He joined the LSO in 1997 as second trumpet. Serving as substitute principal throughout his tenure with the orchestra, he became the LSOโs principal trumpet in 2023. An active musician in the region, he has performed with the Santa Fe Opera, Houston Grand Opera, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Pro Musica, the New Mexico Performing Arts Society, and the Abilene Philharmonic, as well as local organizations such as the Lubbock Chorale, Ballet Lubbock, and Moonlight Musicals.
Dr. Hudson earned the Doctor of Musical Arts and the Master of Music in Performance from Texas Tech University under the tutelage of retired Professor of Trumpet Will Strieder. He earned the Bachelor of Music in Education (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Houstonโs Moores School of Music while studying with Professor Emeritus and retired Houston Symphony Principal Trumpet James Austin.
Dr. Hudson is Professor of Music and Chair of the Fine Arts Department at South Plains College. He joined the faculty of SPC in 2001 and has had many students move on to finish their degrees and become successful educators.
A native Texan, born and raised in Houston, Dr. Hudson has called Lubbock home since 1996. His wife Kimberly is the LSOโs Principal Flute and they have one daughter, Madeline.
Dr. Hudson's favorite LSO memory: "For about 20 years, the trumpet section was Will Strieder, myself, and Joe Vandiver. The LSO's performance of Anton Bruckner's 8th Symphony was bittersweet because it was one of our last times to play together as a section on a monumental orchestral work."
