We canât wait for this summerâs Festival of Contemporary Music, directed by the incredible Gabriela Ortiz đ€©Â
đ¶ FCM is the TMCâs annual showcase of todayâs most innovative and ambitious musical voices, celebrating works from the current landscape alongside landmarks of the new music vanguard of the last century. Each year, TMC Fellows explore unfamiliar and exciting repertoire in direct collaboration with living composers. All Fellows participate in the festival through a variety of instrumentation, including solos, chamber ensembles, and the acclaimed Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. This year, FCM will be held July 24-28, 2025.Â
Â
đŁ GRAMMY-winning composer Gabriela Ortiz will serve as the 2025 Director of the Festival of Contemporary Music. âItâs going to be an incredible opportunity for all of you to not only hear my music, but to hear the music of Latin American composers, Mexican composers, and young women composers such as Diana Syrse, Ellen Reid, and Gabriella Smith.âÂ
Â
Born to a musical family, Ortiz has always felt she didnât choose music - music chose her. Her parents were founding members of the group Los Folkloristas, a renowned music ensemble dedicated to performing Latin American folk music. Growing up in the cosmopolitan thriving metropolis of Mexico City, Ortizâs music education was multifaceted. While playing charango and guitar with her parentsâ group, she was also learning classical piano. Â
Â
Ortizâs music incorporates seemingly disparate musical worlds, from traditional and popular idioms to avant-garde techniques and multimedia works. While she continues to draw inspiration from Mexican subjects, she is interested in composing music that speaks to international audiences. In 2022, Ortiz received the Bellas Artes Gold Medal from the National Institute of Fine Arts. Other major awards include the National Prize for Arts and Literature, Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Fulbright-GarcĂa Robles Fellowship, and a recent GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
