Two Horizons instructors recently taught a class at an off-site venue. I’m intentionally not naming the venue because what happened was not the venue’s fault—it was the behavior of one attendee.

The project involved some lettering, and one attendee commented that it “looks like [racist slur] writing.” There were also two transgender people in attendance, and this same person repeatedly asked, “What do you think they are?” Thankfully, one of our instructors spoke up.

I will never understand how someone can take what is supposed to be a fun, creative evening and turn it into an experience that could make other people feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe.

So, this is a reminder of what Horizons stands for:
We welcome everyone. We believe creativity is for everyone. And we expect people who attend our events to treat others with kindness and respect.
Whatever your personal opinions may be, racism, bigotry, hate, harassment, and mean-spirited behavior have no place at Horizons or at any of our events.

Our classes are meant to be places where people can relax, laugh, create, connect with others, and simply enjoy themselves. If your idea of fun involves hurting, mocking, judging, or making other people uncomfortable, Horizons is not the place for you.

You don't have to agree with everyone. You don't have to understand everyone. But you do need to be kind and respectful.

We will always choose a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful creative community. ❤️

Everyone was feeling fall vibes today at Creative Connections for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We did paint pouring on pumpkins, painting some fall wooden signs, and varnished our clay creations from last week. Next week we will be making sea glass wreaths. There's still time to join us on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 12:00. Just send me a message or check our website for details.
