On the northern tip of Andøya island in Norway, more than 190 miles above the Arctic Circle, a remarkable new museum is emerging from the coastline.

It’s called The Whale—and it looks less like a building and more like a natural part of the landscape.

Designed by Danish architecture studio Dorte Mandrup, the museum features a sweeping concrete roof that rises gently from the rocky shore, creating the impression of a giant whale surfacing from the sea.

The roof will be covered with stones collected from the surrounding area, helping the structure blend seamlessly into its Arctic surroundings. Visitors will even be able to walk across the rooftop, turning it into a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the ocean, Andøya’s mountains, and the islands scattered across the Norwegian Sea.

And the location couldn’t be more fitting.

The waters around Andenes are among the world’s renowned whale-watching destinations. S***m whales can be found there throughout the year in the deep submarine canyon just offshore, while humpback whales, orcas, minke whales, and pilot whales also pass through these waters.

Inside, The Whale will combine science, art, immersive sound, and storytelling to explore whale biology, ocean ecosystems, and humanity’s complex relationship with the sea.

Outdoor paths and viewing areas will extend the experience beyond the museum, connecting visitors directly with the dramatic coastline.

The Whale is scheduled to open on June 4, 2027.

Tembo was a magnificent African elephant, but when rescuers found him on the savannah, he was barely holding on.

A brutal metal snare, left behind by poachers, had wrapped around his body and caused devastating injuries. Weak, dehydrated, and exhausted, Tembo desperately needed help.

Then a team of wildlife rangers arrived, led by an experienced conservationist named Peter.

It’s hard to imagine an animal as powerful as an elephant being brought to its knees by a simple piece of wire.

The rangers carefully freed Tembo from the trap and treated his wounds. Soon after, they moved him to a nearby sanctuary, where he could receive medical care, nourishing food, and a safe place to recover.

For nearly 50 years, Raju knew only one life: chains, pain, and begging.

He was reportedly sold nearly 27 times, forced to walk through India’s streets while begging for money. Heavy, spiked chains dug into his legs, leaving behind scars, wounds, and chronic abscesses.

Then, in July 2014, everything changed.

Wildlife SOS arrived to rescue him.

But Raju’s owner refused to let him go. His chains were tightened, roads were blocked, and people tried to prevent the rescue team from reaching their vehicle.

After hours of struggle, the rescuers finally managed to get Raju onto a truck and take him to safety.

And when they removed his chains, something heartbreaking happened.

Raju appeared to cry.

No one can know exactly what those tears meant. But after decades of being treated as property, Raju was finally experiencing something he had almost never known:

Freedom.

His recovery was not easy. His body carried decades of abuse, and he had learned to fear humans. Healing took time.

But slowly, Raju began to trust again.

He formed bonds with other elephants, especially some of the females at the sanctuary. His life became quieter, safer, and filled with choices.

Today, more than a decade after his rescue, Raju lives at Wildlife SOS with veterinary care, fresh food, a pool, companionship, and room to walk freely.

Imagine getting electricity without power lines, cables, or physical connections.

Researchers at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have demonstrated wireless power transmission by sending electrical energy through the air between two pylons—without a physical wire connecting them.

The system uses microwave or radio-frequency beams to transfer energy across a gap. A receiver on the other side captures the transmitted energy and converts it back into usable electricity.

Wireless electricity isn’t a new idea. More than a century ago, Nikola Tesla dreamed of transmitting power without traditional wires. But today’s technology offers something Tesla could only imagine: highly controlled beams, more precise energy conversion, and increasingly sophisticated systems for directing power across distances.

The potential applications are enormous.

Remote villages and islands could potentially receive electricity without expensive grid construction. Disaster zones could use wireless power when conventional power lines have been destroyed. In the future, similar technology could even help supply energy to moving targets such as drones or ships.

There are still major obstacles. Energy losses, safety concerns, transmission efficiency, and the cost of receiving equipment must all be addressed before the technology could compete with conventional power grids.

So this isn’t the end of power lines—at least not yet.

But Finland’s demonstration shows that the dream of transmitting electricity through the air is becoming more than just a century-old idea.

On Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia, researchers have tested a surprisingly simple idea: placing a floating wetland filled with native reeds and sedges on top of a wastewater lagoon.

And the results were remarkable.

Over a two-year trial, researchers from RMIT University, CSIRO, and Westernport Water monitored a 330-square-meter floating wetland and compared it with a similar lagoon without one.

The difference was clear.

The lagoon with the floating wetland produced more than 25% fewer greenhouse gas emissions overall.

Carbon dioxide emissions fell by as much as 36%, while methane—a far more potent greenhouse gas—dropped by up to 66%. Nitrogen-related emissions also decreased.

So how does a floating garden make such a difference?

The secret is beneath the surface.

As the native plants grow, their roots extend down through the floating platform and into the wastewater. These roots create a habitat for microbial communities that consume nutrients in the water.

That process improves water quality while also reducing the conditions that generate methane and other greenhouse gases.

And there’s another major advantage.

Instead of rebuilding an entire wastewater treatment system, floating wetlands can potentially be retrofitted onto existing lagoons with relatively little infrastructure disruption.

The plants simply float on the surface, their roots work underwater, and the lagoon continues operating underneath.

Wastewater treatment is an important but often overlooked source of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

This experiment suggests that sometimes, the solution doesn’t have to be a massive new machine or expensive reconstruction.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have discovered something surprisingly simple that could help vegetable farmers reduce their reliance on pesticides: the color of the insect net may matter more than anyone expected.

The researchers tested red insect-proof nets alongside traditional white and black nets on fields growing Kujo leeks, a traditional Japanese variety of Welsh onion.

Their target was the onion thrips—a tiny insect capable of causing serious crop damage and forcing farmers to repeatedly apply insecticides.

But the red nets produced a striking result.

Thrips were significantly less likely to enter areas protected by the red nets. The researchers found that the color itself appears to act as a visual deterrent, discouraging the insects before they can reach the plants.

And there was another advantage.

Because the red net helps keep pests away, farmers can potentially use larger mesh openings instead of extremely fine netting. That allows more sunlight and airflow into the crop while reducing the risk of excessive heat and humidity buildup.

Field trials showed that the approach could reduce insecticide applications by roughly 25% to 50% compared with conventional methods.

That could mean lower farming costs, less chemical exposure for workers, and fewer pesticides entering the surrounding environment.

It’s a reminder that sometimes agricultural innovation doesn’t require expensive technology.

The Revenge Dress.

What makes the story even more fascinating is that Diana had owned the dress for about three years.

She reportedly thought it was too daring to wear.

As cities grow, the distance between people and wildlife gets smaller.

Forests, open fields, wetlands, and other natural areas that once gave animals food, shelter, and safe places to raise their young are increasingly being replaced by roads, houses, and commercial developments.

For people, development can mean new homes, better infrastructure, and growing communities.

But for wildlife, it can mean losing the places they have depended on for generations.

Animals don’t understand property lines, highways, or city boundaries. When their habitats disappear, they may be forced closer to neighborhoods, roads, and other dangerous areas simply to survive.

That can lead to more human-wildlife conflicts and place even greater pressure on species already struggling to survive.

Finding the right balance isn’t easy. People need places to live and communities need to grow. But protecting forests, wetlands, green spaces, and wildlife corridors can give animals a chance to survive alongside us.

Development doesn’t always have to mean destroying nature.

With thoughtful planning, protected habitats, and connected wildlife corridors, cities and wildlife can share the same world.

The real question is:

For more than 100 years, donkeys have been part of the seaside landscape at Coney Beach in Porthcawl, South Wales.

The Bateman family has operated the donkey and pony rides there since 1918 — through two world wars, economic downturns, and generations of changing British seaside culture.

Now, that century-old tradition has come to an end.

As part of the Porthcawl Waterfront Regeneration Scheme, Bridgend Council has extended seasonal restrictions on animals at Coney Beach. From May 1 to September 30, animals are banned from the beach, meaning no licence can be issued for donkey or pony rides during the busy summer season.

The council says the decision is part of its wider regeneration plans, rather than an animal-welfare ruling.

For Jay Bateman, however, the impact is deeply personal.

His family has depended on the rides for generations, and he says the decision has taken away his livelihood and left the family devastated.

To the Batemans, these animals were more than a business. They represented a family tradition that had survived for more than a century and become part of Porthcawl’s identity.

Animal welfare advocates, meanwhile, have welcomed the end of the rides.

Jacqui Howe, founder of a donkey sanctuary, described beach donkey rides as part of a disappearing tradition, comparing them with practices such as circuses and greyhound racing that Wales is increasingly moving away from.

The controversy reflects a much bigger question:

What happens when a tradition that once seemed normal no longer fits with changing views about animal welfare?

For the Bateman family, it is the heartbreaking end of a way of life.

For animal welfare advocates, it is a long-overdue change.

Robert Goodman was lying in a hospital bed, chemotherapy flowing into his body, when he realized he had a problem.

The Florida high school history teacher was battling colon cancer. After surgery and months of treatment, he had used every paid sick day he had.

But he still needed weeks of chemotherapy.

He faced an impossible choice: return to the classroom while seriously ill, or take the time he needed to recover and lose the paycheck his family depended on.

So, from his hospital bed, Robert took a selfie and posted a simple message on Facebook.

He asked if any fellow teachers would be willing to donate some of their sick days.

He only needed about 20 days.

What happened next stunned him.

Within four days, teachers, school staff, administrators, and even professors who had never met him donated enough sick days to cover an entire semester.

People gave up their own paid time off so Robert could focus on one thing: getting better.

“I couldn’t believe it happened so fast,” he said.

Robert was overwhelmed by the generosity. He even felt guilty, knowing that many people were facing struggles of their own.

He promised that if he didn’t need all the donated days, he would give them back.

He had asked for 20 days.

His colleagues gave him something far greater:
