Hi! Long time no see. Changing careers is rough, and I have been focusing on survival, mostly. But I have some ideas I am excited for, and I hope to be more active on here. :)

Here’s a penguin to brighten your day! 🐧 This was a special project from May for a previous student who shares my penguin obsession.

I have been very absent from social media lately because I am now in the last month of my high school teaching career and have been focused entirely on enjoying these last few weeks. I haven't been painting or doing much of anything else, just teaching and trying to process these huge changes.

However I need to hop on here and share that I am very grateful for this opportunity to share all of the work I created over the last two years from May 5 - June 2 at Headquarters Winery and Mercantile. There will be a Meet the Artist night on May 16 from 5 - 8 pm, and all work will be for sale. I would love to see you there!

“Summer Salsa, Original Painting”

Summer salsa, waiting to happen.

This piece is the first (and only!) pastel painting I have ever done, aside from a smaller pastel commission immediately following. I completed it as a junior in high school, and I fell in love with the instant ability to deposit pure color into the drawing. It was the perfect medium for a painting of summer heat and flavor.

But I also felt frustrated with the huge soft pastels which made it so difficult to achieve the level of detail I wanted in a painting, and once I discovered oil paint I didn't pick up pastels again. But now I am discovering a need for spontaneity in my art, and to get my hands deeper into the process. So it will likely be just a matter of time before pastel makes a reappearance.

Original Artwork Details:

Size: 13" x 20"
Medium: soft pastel on primed board
Artwork is shipped flat and unframed.

"Silvery Blue Butterfly, Original Painting"

Butterflies are magical creatures of delicate detail and gentle trust. When I was a child, there was one summer which exploded with butterflies. My mom, my sister, and I laid out dishes of sugar water, and watched the butterflies dance around in what seemed like hundreds. We delighted when they lighted upon us, watching their proboscis flit around sucking up the nectar on our fingertips. This summer was imprinted in my memory, and I haven't ever seen so many butterflies in one place again, despite having visited butterfly gardens in many states. Now my children approach butterflies with the same joy, and we "collect" them in our mind's eye on every hike we take as a family. This painting of a silvery blue butterfly (Glaucopsyche lygdamus) is reminiscent of insect taxidermy, but painted larger than life. It uses metallic watercolors and macro level detail to capture the shimmery essence and tiny intricate features of a fuzzy butterfly. It truly sparkles in the light.

Original artwork details:

Size: 8.5" x 11.5"
Medium: lightfast professional watercolors and Finetec metallic watercolors on Arches 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper
Artwork is shipped flat and unframed.

If you would love a gifted rainbow painting from me to you, read to the end! 💛 Here is an update on my painting giveaway challenge to myself and some personal observations/takeaways from the experience.

🌈 I’ve finished 3 pieces which I’m so excited to get sent off to their respective homes.

🌈 I love gifting paintings. It’s an amazing experience to feel connected-even a little bit-to someone I’ve never met.

🌈 I did not achieve my goals of playing with different styles, painting looser and more expressively, or any of the other technical goals I had for myself. I think this is partially by nature, and it is just going to be hard for me, something to keep working on. But I also think it was because each of these pieces had such a special meaning and it was so important to me to get it right, at least as well as I could.

🌈 I’ve fallen way short on my original goal of completing 12 paintings by the end of December. 🤣 HOWEVER I did do more painting in a month than I have done in the previous six months combined, and it has been very good for me as I’ve been processing some difficult things in my life. So I am grateful for that and proud to have finished 3 pieces. I do plan to still finish the rest at whatever pace is required.

🌈 I am still looking for people who would love a gifted rainbow-inspired painting of anything, so if you love color and have an idea for a vibrant piece, read on! ☺️ And if you have an idea for an awesome painting or theme for after the rainbow series, please let me know in the comments!
