🎭 AUDITIONS: MAKING GOD LAUGH 🎭
Center Stage Community Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for Making God Laugh, a family comedy directed by Matt Spurlock.
Set over 30 years and four holiday gatherings, Making God Laugh follows the Nowak family as their three adult children return home and navigate changing dreams, expectations, relationships, and family traditions. Beginning in 1980, the play reminds us that no matter how carefully we plan our lives, we often arrive at unexpected destinations.
🎭 CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
RUTHIE — Mother & Wife
An obsessive-compulsive, highly controlling homemaker who believes rules and traditions are absolute. She loves her family fiercely, though she constantly pushes buttons, manages every detail, and pressures her children.
BILL — Father & Husband
A quiet, undemonstrative dad who mostly enables and accommodates Ruthie’s control out of deep love. As the years go by, however, he eventually reaches his limit and finds the courage to take a stand.
RICHARD (RICK) — Oldest Son
A former high school football star who fancies himself a pl***oy. He spends years chasing get-rich-quick schemes, wearing trendy clothes, and driving odd cars before eventually settling into a more dependable role.
MADDIE — Middle Child & Only Daughter
An aspiring actress in her mid-to-late 20s at the start of the play. Maddie is insecure, frequently clashes with her mother, and is closest to her father and younger brother. Over time, she comes to terms with her relationship with Ruthie and finds greater confidence in herself.
THOMAS — Youngest Son
A young man entering the priesthood at the beginning of the play. Thomas is generally exempt from Ruthie’s harsher criticisms and serves as the stable, spiritual presence within the family.
