Happy Juneteenth!!! Today we celebrate Black Independence Day!

For those who don’t know, it took 2 years 5 months and 18 days for the slaves in Texas to be informed of their freedom. Let me say that again. The Texas government/slave owners kept the Emancipation Proclamation a secret for 2 yrs 5 mo & 18 days. When the newly freed people found out, they “took to the streets” in celebration. In Texas,they marked the day yearly with picnics and celebrations much like traditional 4th of July celebrations; until Jim Crow threatened the live of all who celebrated.

The Civil Rights Movement saw a resurgence of the celebrations in Texas. And when in 1976 the country was set to celebrate its 200th Birthday many Black Americans, rightly so, said not our independence. In 2020 because of the horrific atrocities that led to the Black Lives Matter protests Juneteenth was brought into the spotlight and made a National Holiday in 2021.

Tomorrow, June 19th, is a very important day. One, that in today’s political climate, is trying to be erased. The systemic racism that our country was built on, and most mainstream religions perpetuate, means that we all grew up with racial biases. No matter how progressive I am or how many of those internalized systems I dismantle, I still have more work to do. I urge you to take the necessary steps to start educating yourself on these issues. When you are confronted with something new, don’t fight. Apologize, admit you didn’t know and do better. We can never truly grasp the lived experience of someone who society judges negatively solely by the color of their skin.

In honor of tonight's spicy romance book club, Aphrodities Library, we are featuring a few of our not so spicy LGBTQIA+ Romance selections.

First we have Be Dazzled by Ryan La Sala. This MLM YA romance features cosplay, competition, exes, forced cooperation, & unresolved feelings. What could possibly go wrong?

Next we have Chef's Choice by TJ Alexander. If you're a fan of the "opps our fake relationship just became a real one." trope than this trans romance is for you.

Finally we have, Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rececca Thorne, a sapphic fantasy romance. What do you get when you take one of the Queen's private guards who dreams of opening a bookshop and tea house with her girlfriend (who just so happens to be the most powerful mage in existence); a kidnapping; a f**k my responsibilities attitude; and a spoiled rotten queen throwing an epic temper tantrum? A good time. That's what. What?! Did you actually think we were going to tell you? 😈 You have to read the book.
