My Story
I first picked up a violin as a child fascinated with sound and feel, but it wasn’t until I was almost 13 that I started to really make it mine and study on my own. With a scratchy $60 violin in one hand, I picked up some music, watched video after video, and spent hours and hours of my day plucking away where I got lost amidst the music or until it sounded just right. Growing up, music filled my home in one way or another, and with the encouragement of my family I continued refining my technique. It wasn’t until I was near 15, when I had my first ‘real paid lesson’. Within 6 months, my ear for music and ability to learn quickly took me on a journey where I outgrew my first teacher, and moved on to study at the Cumberland Arts Academy, followed by Travis Patton who each provided me with several opportunities as a young musician to perform for local events, charities, in orchestra’s and to learn more about how to share and grow in my musical gift. Practice. Practice. Practice. I played anywhere I could. In front of family next to our home piano, with friends, at local coffee shops, churches and on the porch where no one was watching. Instead of purchasing a car when I turned 16, I spent all I worked for to upgrade my violin. Like a shiny new watch, I took it everywhere I went. I began teaching lessons, playing on church worship teams, playing for larger community and private events, which eventually I was able to successfully grow into a small business. By the time I was in college, Music City Violin was born, whereby I could share the gift of music with those who needed the same inspiration, and that which has been so valuable to me. The opportunities and encouragement provided to me from my family, the many teachers, and support of my wife & so many others has launched my musical career that is now inclusive of session work, events, continued teaching and performing as part of the Graci Phillips band.
