Category: Integrity in the Music Business

Clue: This young singer/songwriter risked losing big money when she refused to let Elvis Presley record one of her songs -- he insisted on receiving 50% of the songwriter royalties as part of his offer. Years later, when a different singer made her song a hit, she remarked: "(In the end) I made enough money off of that song to buy Graceland" Hint: The songwriter is loved by everyone!!

Our final performers on Friday will be Skip Gorman () and Mark Burds ()!

Skip Gorman was introduced to traditional music at age eight, when he received his first guitar and a Jimmie Rodgers record. Growing up, he was lucky to see musicians like Eck Robertson, Bill Monroe, and Maybelle Carter at the historic Newport Folk Festival. An encounter with Monroe at age 14 was a pivotal moment in the young musician's life, and aside from being a masterful cowboy singer and fine fiddler, Gorman is one of the premier mandolinists in the style of Bill Monroe. Skip will be accompanied by standout country and blues musician Mark Burds.

We're welcoming back Ash Sullivan () as our second performer on Friday!

Erin Ash Sullivan is a New England singer-songwriter with story-driven songs that reflect a deep sense of place. Her lyrics—sometimes heartfelt, sometimes funny—are always authentic and drawn from her lived experience, harnessing the power of story to build connection. Her 2024 album, Signposts and Marks, debuted at #4 on the FAI Folk DJ Chart, and Americana UKdescribed her as “a songwriter of the highest order.” Erin was the 2026 recipient of the Focus Music Rising Artist Award (DC), the 2025 winner of the Wildflower Performing Songwriter contest (TX) , a “Most Wanted” selection from the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (CT), and a 2025 Honorable Mention at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest Songwriter Showcase (CO). She is also the three-time winner of her hometown’s Fourth of July Pie Eating Contest. She's one of our favorites, don't miss it!

Get ready, because our season closers will be The Rough & Tumble ()!

The Rough & Tumble is the dynamic folk-rock duo of Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler, known for their magnetic harmonies, heartfelt songwriting, and unmistakable on-stage chemistry. Blending roots, Americana, and pop-leaning melodies, their music is both intimate and joy-filled—songs about love, resilience, and finding beauty in the everyday. Whether trading verses, harmonizing in unison, or inviting the audience into the moment, The Rough & Tumble create performances that feel personal and communal at once. With a growing national following and a reputation for living rooms a little lighter than they found them, their music reminds us why we gather around songs in the first place. Come ready to get up and party!

Our first performer for the finale will be the Derek Burkins Trio ()!

Derek captures praise and new listeners each time he takes the stage. His songs are thoughtful stories about powerful moments in life: love, family, and home. Songs range from the plaintive and determined lament of “Tobacco Farmer’s Daughter” to the joy of a life well-lived in “The Sweetest Girl I Know,” from love lost in “When Morning Comes Around” to forgiveness gained in “Take Me Home.” Derek has been playing guitar for almost 40 years, picking up clawhammer banjo and mandolin in the more recent decades. Derek has enjoyed playing for audiences with hundreds of performances, success in many songwriting competitions, and an ever-growing community of students and wonderful fans, for which he is extremely grateful. Come support this ACH favorite!
