On this day in 1987 a group of hired labourers carried 700 old hospital beds onto Saunton Sands in Devon, England for a photo shoot by Robert Dowling & Storm Thorgerson.

Carefully arranged they were to form the cover to the iconic Pink Floyd album 'A momentary lapse of reason'

Despite meticulous planning the weather intervened, with rain forcing the shoot to be abandoned, the exercise was repeated a few weeks later.

By coincidence 1987 was also the year that Photoshop was first developed (although it wasn't marketed until 1988) fast forward a few years and thanks to Photoshop, AI, and other graphic handling/manipulation programmes we are unlikely to ever see the likes of this epically staged photo shoot again.

This day in history …

"Isn't this where...we came in?" The closing, and opening, words of Pink Floyd's 1979 album The Wall, released on this day. Spending 68 weeks on the UK charts, reaching number 3, it has Pink Floyd's simplest, yet pretty iconic, outer cover. Here's the more elaborately designed inner spread:

Apologies for a day late. It was forty seven years ago yesterday that Pink Floyd's album 'Wish you were here' went on general sale in the UK (having been released from the record company's secure storage for distribution on the 12th)

The album reached number one in both the UK & the US - spending 84 weeks in the charts.

On a sadder note today is also the anniversary of the death of Pink Floyd's original keyboard player Richard Wright who died at the age of 65 in 2008.

To mark these two events - the cover photo from Wish you were here, an amazing image by Aubrey "Po" Powell with the artistic input of the legendary Storm Thorgerson.

The image was taken before the days of photoshop and shows Hollywood stuntmen Ronnie Rondell Jr. and Danny Rogers shaking hands, whilst Rondell is actually in flames.

It seems that this summer has been one for the private gigs. We enjoyed performance the last weekend of the season at Linn Valley Lake. Perfect weather. Lots of bugs, though, LOL.

Richard Wright would have turned 79 years old today.

Richard Wright would have turned 79 years old today. He was a founder member, keyboardist, and vocalist of Pink Floyd, performing on all but one of the group's albums including The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Division Bell, and playing on all of their tours.

Wright grew up in Hatch End, Middlesex and met future Pink Floyd bandmates Roger Waters and Nick Mason while studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic. After being joined by frontman and songwriter Syd Barrett, the group found commercial success in 1967. Barrett's instability led to him being replaced by David Gilmour and Wright taking over songwriting duties with Waters. Initially a straightforward singer/songwriter, Wright later acted as an arranger to Waters and Gilmour's compositions. He began to contribute less towards the end of the 1970s and left the band after touring The Wall in 1981. He rejoined the band as a session player in 1987 for A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and became a full-time member again for The Division Bell in 1994. Sessions with Wright during this period were later released on the album The Endless River. Away from Pink Floyd, Wright recorded two solo albums, including a collaboration with Anthony Moore on Broken China, and briefly formed the duo Zee. After rejoining Waters, Mason and Gilmour as Pink Floyd for Live 8 in 2005, he became part of Gilmour's regular solo touring band, singing occasional lead on songs such as "Arnold Layne", before his death in September 2008.

Overshadowed by bandmates Barrett, Waters and Gilmour, Wright was the quietest and most reserved member of Pink Floyd. His contributions have sometimes been overlooked, but his death brought a reappraisal and recognition of his talents. His jazz and improvisation influences and keyboard performances were an important part of the Pink Floyd sound.

He passed away on Sept. 15, 2008. He was only 65 years old.

Happy Birthday Richard. RIP Your music will live on forever. Thank You.
