Little background story:
My Aunty Darlene is from Aotearoa "Land of the Long White Cloud," but most of you know it as New Zealand. Her people are called, "Maori." Her tribe, NGAPUHI. She married a coconut, my Uncle from Tonga 🤣 Ever since she took me in after highschool, I have always seen our Tongan culture everywhere (at home, functions, etc). She embraced our culture wholeheartedly because she loves my uncle. But poor mum, she barely has anything display of hers. Then I noticed on her wall a very sad looking board that's perfect for a new skill and project to be discovered. I had a long time writers block-artist block, not, because I didn't have any idea...it's because I wanted to do something new. But one thing I know without a doubt, her 3 moko (grand-jewels) are her life. Family is everything to her. I took a Maori mythical creature called the Taniwha that represents her mokos (IYKYK) 🤫☠️ She can finally have something from her culture from me.
Besides my grandma who instilled in me and passed down her artistic gifts to my dad and then to me. My Aunty Darlene has been my #1 support with my art. From painting, to printing, to crafting...she loves to display them on her walls and tell people about it. Her whole family loves what I do, which encourages me to do more. This is our love language. Thank you, Mum!
