I’ll never forget this day. 🙏

I am deeply honored to have been sworn in as the President of the National Speakers Association – Washington DC chapter. To be nominated and elected for this key role by such an esteemed group of highly accomplished, internationally recognized, and hall of fame speakers is a huge blessing.

I soberly acknowledge the weight of the responsibility of leading this prestigious group of industry experts. I come with a servant’s heart, seeking to serve the board, as the board serves the membership, and the membership serves the community.

I am grateful for the board I have selected to join me on this journey: Ann Murdoch, as Immediate Past-President, has done a remarkable job this past year in leading. I am looking forward to passing the gavel next year to Sylvia Baffour, who is now our President-Elect. I’m thankful that Gina Dolin will serve a second year of her term as Membership Chair. Chazz Scott, M.S. 🧠 will serve in the critical role of Treasurer. Lisa Conners, MBA, ACC, CPC , Myla DeLoatch, CSP (she, her, hers), and Frankie Lucas (Front Row Frankie) (who I was delighted to recognize as this year’s “Member of the Year” award recipient), will round out our talented and dedicated board. Each of you was selected based on your character, commitment, and demonstrated servant-leadership. Together, we will make an impact

8,760 hours from now, (the number of hours in one year), my goal is to be able to look back and see that every hour we have spent has been adding value and M.A.I. - Making An Impact.

If you are a speaker, trainer, coach, podcaster, author, and are looking to grow in your craft, build a better business, and find a community of like-minded people to help encourage you on your journey, please join us. I welcome you as my guest to come to a meeting and see what the buzz is all about. I’m confident that you will find that you have found your tribe!

Finally, a huge thank you to Steve Bollar, CSP®, for his fabulous presentation as our featured speaker.  Steve was also the person who has led the Chapter Leadership Committee.

My seat for my flight back to DC. ✈️

No, this is not A.I. generated. I'm legit sitting in the pilot's seat. 👨🏼‍✈️

How safe would you feel flying with me? 🤔

Sowhahappenedwas...🤷🏼‍♂️

After my speaking event at the Higher Ed Risk Management Symposium in Houston, TX, I caught my flight on Southwest to Washington DC. We stopped first in New Orleans. Then, en route to DC, weather diverted us to have to land in Richmond, VA to gas up and wait until it was safe to fly into DC.

While stranded here for a few hours, the captain and flight crew entertained us, handed out word search sheets and pens and had a contest to see who could complete it first. The winner won $100 Southwest bucks to use on a future flight. 🏆

They told jokes, allowed passengers to tour the cockpit (so, of course I had to). Last time I did that was as a young kid over a half century ago. They turned what was obviously an inconvenient and frustrating situation into a fun party-like atmosphere. 🥳

Great example of picking a bouquet with the flowers that are in your reach. 💐 Wonderful customer service. 💯

Cool lessons in this. Control what you can. Adjust to what you can't control. Find the fun and laughter in every situation. 😅 And keep a positive and grateful attitude in all circumstances. 🙏🙌

It was an honor to speak on Customer Service Excellence and risk management to the GIHP and Conyers administrators.

Departments from IT, Finance, events, maintenance and facilities, Police, all gathered where I shared best practices for enhancing emotional intelligence, problem solving, de-escalating difficult situations, mitigating risks, all while building your brand as a customer service champion.

I'm grateful for the opportunity, and it's rewarding to hear the encouraging feedback. My hope that this will M.A.I. - Make An Impact!

It was an honor to be the for the Lathrop GPM State of Litigation conference held at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO (home of the Chiefs). I spoke on “A.I., Ethics & Cybersecurity – What You Need to Know.”

The 1st goal was to demystify cybersecurity principles that are easy-to-implement and do not require an advanced degree in computer science and a quintessential beanie propeller geek hat! 😄

Understanding how to identify and assess is the first place to start. We used “gamification” with a “Jenga” version of the Cube to demonstrate what happens when Monitoring is not effective. 🙃

Before we can talk about A.I. and its uses, we have to first understand the ethical issues of how the A.I. has been trained. What inherent might there be that may cause the results to be prejudiced or misrepresentative? How do we verify the results of our prompts to ensure it is factual and not ?  (Did someone actually cross the English Channel on foot?!) 🤔

It was rewarding to hear from so many of the attendees that the message resonated, and people felt equipped to apply the principles that evening!

Many thanks to my fellow National Speakers Association mastermind colleague, President-Elect of the Kansas City chapter, Karen Fenaroli, for the recommendation and for the partners and team at Lathrop GPM for the invitation! 🙌

P.S. As a lifelong New England Patriots fan (even back when they were the Boston Patriots and played at Fenway Park), I have always had respect for the Chiefs organization and ownership. Arrowhead Stadium is an impressive facility. But, no, I did not buy any Chiefs gear. Go Pats! 🏈 😜

It was an honor to be the for the College and University Auditors of Virginia conference. I spoke on “Writing and Speaking for Impact.”

For all of my colleagues in the , , , , , , , and other technical spaces, having effective and confident is critical. It is, however, often overlooked. Having strong technical skills is foundational. But if we don’t combine that with the ability to deliver compelling , our work is less likely to be .

Big thank you to the and organizers of this event for inviting me to be part of it!  Becky Holmes, Jan Eckert, Mary Barnett, CPA, MBA, CISA, and many others. It was wonderful to meet and network with the attendees and to hear their encouraging feedback.

If you are looking to elevate your and develop more confidence, or if you are interested in having me speak to and provide effective tips and strategies for your group, send me a DM and let’s connect.

It was an honor to serve as the Master of Ceremonies ( ) for the Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival - for the 7th year in a row! Thank you, Dawn Tanner, CEP and Jill Miller for inviting me back again!

Being the emcee is so much more than just introducing the various acts and dignitaries. It’s entertaining and interacting with the crowd, performers, vendors, sponsors, workers, and being the glue that holds it all together seamlessly. It’s part , part actor, part , part facilitator, part behind-the-scenes , part /encourager to the nervous performers before they go on stage, part , and doing it all while keeping everything on schedule and thinking 5 steps ahead throughout the day, all day, 2 days in a row.

That means being prepared to creatively and spontaneously fill the time while performers are back stage changing costumes. Reading the crowd, it might mean putting on a group dance song and either bringing people up on stage or me stepping down off stage to dance with the crowd. It might mean going into the crowd and interviewing some of the patrons on the mic, always finding a way to bring , and .

It takes a full portfolio of skill sets, experience, and confidence to ensure it is entertaining and all flows smoothly. Seeing the smiles on peoples’ faces and hearing their comments about how much fun they had makes it all worth it.

If you are planning a conference or event, don’t just have the CEO or some officer fill that role. In the vast majority of cases, that person is not likely to have all the skill sets listed above to do this well.  That’s an unfair position to put the CEO in to perhaps risk embarrassment, awkward moments, and low audience engagement. Instead, invest in a professional Master of Ceremonies. You’ll be glad you did. So will your audiences.

It was an honor to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the National Speakers Association – Washington DC event!

The featured speaker was our chapter’s very own • Dr. Willie Jolley. He has been called, “The most powerful speaker, singer and author combination in the world today!” He was named “One of the Outstanding Five Speakers in the World” by the 175,000 members of Toastmasters International. Dr. Willie Jolley dropped so many golden nuggets with our members. So grateful for his abundant generosity in sharing with us!

Then we transitioned to our chapter’s 2nd annual Last Story Standing storytelling competition! We had 11 worthy contestants each being judged on their 5-minute story’s:

Marketability – the story’s ability to drive demand for the speaker
Impact – the story’s ability to drive a message and motivate the audience
Presentation – the storyteller’s ability to connect with the audience

Our 3 esteemed judges had a challenging job as all of the speaker’s brought their A-game. The winner was (drum roll….) Bex Novak! She will go on to compete in the Regionals with a chance to become one of the 3 finalists who will perform their story on the main stage at Influence, the National Speakers Association’s annual conference being held this year in Scottsdale, AZ.

Many thanks to all the participants, the judges, our dedicated board, our members and guests, and especially Dr. Willie Jolley, for making this a great event!

It was an honor to be the Industry Keynote Speaker for the CCDC Cybersecurity Conference at the University of Maryland. I spoke on “Cyber Risk Explained” – taking the complex and crafting the messaging so that it is understood by executive leaders who may not be as technically savvy.

That communication gap is something I have seen in board rooms over the past 3 decades. That’s why I am passionate about helping technical, audit, compliance, medical professionals and other leaders to enhance their written and verbal communication skills.

Thank you, David H. Tobey for the invitation and opportunity to speak to this group of future leaders in the cybersecurity space!
