Tragic Comedy: Musical Filth

It is with much consideration and chagrin that I must announce Tragic Comedy will be postponing all stand-up events until we can ensure respect and safety for EVERYONE.

Unfortunately our last event ended with irresponsibility and completely inappropriate abuse of power of (non-management) staff. While our needs have been met to keep the stage safe, inflated egos and cliques have brought the hate right back to our events, and that is not something I will continue. We do not exclude people if they aren’t in the cool kid group, and we never will. We will start again when we find a way to truly provide the space we strive for. Bullies aren’t just racists, trans/homophobes, and misogynists, sometimes the call is coming from inside the house. Hate has many forms, and I accept none of them, especially in what is supposed to be a professional setting.

Until then we will continue working on our sketch comedy and musicals, so we are not disappearing! I apologize that we have to take away this opportunity, and I promise we will bring it back.

Next months comedy night is super stacked with some great touring talent!

We’re coming through Jayhawk country on our way to The Chief Comedy Festival with a show at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence Kansas! Known for Rock and Roll and pinball, the Replay Lounge has been a purveyor of cheap beer, tasty cocktails and great music since 1993! Zac Maas, Ameerah Sanders, Ty Clay and Rachael O’Brien will be rocking the stage with hilarious comedy on Tuesday May 2nd with special host Madeline Roger of Tragic Comedy: Musical Filth! Thank you to everyone who made it out last night, we had a great time.

An even bigger thank you to the patrons that voiced their discomfort during a couple of sign up sets. Our goal as a production group is to make space for people whose voices are not always heard simply because they do not feel safe or welcome. Last night that goal was not met, and we apologize for that.

Our event is not a place for bullies to make fun of people or target the marginalized. Humor doesn’t have to be harmful. If this is something that you cannot get behind, there are plenty of other comedy nights in town, and you are more than welcome to attend those 😁

Tragic Comedy will be taking a brief hiatus while we collect some names and put them in jars. Happy Spring!
